Flare up at Kelley Land and Cattle

A small grass fire broke out at Kelley Land and Cattle Company on Monday. At 1:22 p.m., a passerby called 911 and reported they saw smoke, according to the Saratoga Police Department.

The Saratoga Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched.

The fire was apparently started by barrels of old logs from a controlled burn on the property last week that got whipped up by the wind, according to Kelley Landy and Cattle Company's ranch manager Mike Crimmins.

"We were working up on a ditch when we saw smoke over behind the headquarters," said Crimmins on when he first noticed the fire.

The fire spread over 10-15 acres before it was brought under control by fire crews from the Saratoga and Encampment Volunteer Fire Departments around 7 p.m. on Monday evening.

Saratoga Volunteer Fire Chief Randy Sikes cautions anyone doing any burns to "be careful on what you burn and when," and to keep an eye on the area afterwards.
