The Cowboy Couture changes ownership

Maria Johnson has always had an interest in fashion. When Dixie Berger told her she was thinking of selling The Cowboy Couture to pursue other interests, Johnson jumped right on it.

Johnson was familiar with the process, because she had worked for Berger for nearly a year.

In January, Johnson became the new owner of The Cowboy Couture and she is having fun with the business.

"I'll never stop learning," Johnson said. "There is so much to learn." She has received lots of help. "People around here have been very helpful."

Johnson said Berger has helped her a lot and said that Laura Morrow, owner of the Laura M has given her a lot of direction and helpful hints. "Dixie and (Laura) have been so encouraging," Johnson said.

Johnson is expanding the inventory to include some of her ideas that she has been tossing around.

Recently, she had a table at the Saratoga/Encampment game and the items were selling fast.

"I didn't even have my table set up and people were lining up," Johnson said.

One of the popular items was an infinity scarf. She used rhinestones to spell Tigers or Panthers. She made eight scarves and most of them were sold during junior varsity game.

Johnson's assistants, Aspen Sewell and Madison Johnson, were sporting new attire that Johnson had come with. The elementary students had shirts with the saying, "Come and get your paws up".

Johnson had just learned a new technique and she was experimenting with the girls' shirts.

They were a big hit, too.

Johnson said she loves the creative process, and how fashion can change people into thinking differently about themselves.

"The computer work is the most challenging," Johnson said. "I am more of the go-getter person."

Her inventory showed it, as the table was filled with new items and customers were coming up to view and buy the new merchandise.

As Johnson becomes more familiar with the business she is already finding herself busy with special orders.
