No snow, no problem

The weather was perfect for the Sierra Winter Carnival Friday and Saturday – a balmy 34 degrees most of Saturday.

The only problem – no snow. Traditionally, if there is no snow in Encampment, the town gets snow from the Sierra Madres – but that didn't happen this year and the popular sled races on 8th and Rankin were cancelled.

The cancellation did not deter one family who came from Longmont, Colo. they found snow and took their children sledding before heading to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Chili Feed.

At the Chili and Bread Cook-off, held at Grandview Park, there were more contestants than attendees.

Wrapped in coats and gloves, judges tested chili and bread to decide the contest's winners.

While judges were sampling chili and bread, carnival volunteers shoveled old snow from the park onto 6th Street to have enough snow on the road for the Sixth Street Sprint.

The lack of fresh snow presented a few challenges for snow golfers as they sliced their way to the green.

In true Winter Carnival style, the attendees made the best of it and appeared to have fun.
