The fish hatchery question, froze fingers, Encampment wants job corps camp and Panthers win regionals

Again and again the old appropriation comes to light in every legislature, for a State Fish Hatchery. This is an old story and we don’t believe the legislature this time will fall for it any quicker than in the past. The only branch hatchery that was ever worth a cent in this state was the Saratoga Station, and it was eventually lost. Now that we are to have the big government hatchery in this state, we will be able to make up for the dilatory action of the state in making up for fish planting. This end of the state is the big fishing waters, and we havn’t had a single trout from the state in something like eight years.

John Norman, young rider from Meeker, Colo., was treated here last Friday morning for several badly frozen fingers, suffered while he was driving a band of horses from Meeker country to a ranch in the upper valley. He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Norman of Dragon, Utah, former residents of the Platte valley.

Although with care the injured members may heal, it is not unlikely the young man will lose the tips of part or all of the fingers. He returned to Meeker Saturday, making the trip in a truck which had been driven here for that purpose. His saddle horse was left at the Bingham ranch.

Application has been submitted to the Federal government seeking to have a Job Corps camp established in Encampment, according to announcement made this week by Duane Cruse, mayor of the upper valley town.

Governor Clifford P. Hanson has also been informed of the town’s desire to have a 100-man camp built in the north section of Encampment. Mayor Cruse said the town has made about 30 acres of land available for the camp location.

Preliminary proposals show that about 100 boys ages 16 thru 21 would live at the camp, under the supervision of seven or eight qualified supervisors and instructors. It is estimated that the establishment of such a camp in Encampment would mean about $180,000 per year in additional revenue for the town.

The Saratoga Panthers returned from the 2-A Southwest Regional tournament with the championship trophy again in hand, along with an assortment of other honors.

Most Panther fans returned with near heart failure. The defending conference and regional champions started the tournament in fine fashion, jumping out in front of Big Piney, leading by as much as 15 points and taking a 40-26 lead into the locker room at halftime. Two different teams returned to the floor, however, and the Panthers were flat enough to let the aggressive Punchers back into the game and were left tied at 70 after regulation play.

The overtime period was just as tight, but the Panthers held their poise, canning 8 of 9 free throws. Junior reserve center Cal Wallace nailed both ends of a bonus situation with 4 seconds left to ice the game, 81-78.
