Good ice augured for Fishing Derby

Dana Little, Member Services Manager for the Saratoga/Platte Valley Chamber of Commerce reports that, as of last Friday, the ice on Saratoga Lake thickened to seven or eight inches.

"It should be a wonderful derby," Little said in anticipation of the 32nd annual Saratoga Ice Fishing Derby to be held Jan. 17 and 18.

Vince Hytrek confirmed the thickness of the ice last Friday. Holes he augered Monday afternoon near the boat ramp went through 10 inches of ice.

Hytrek moved his fishing shack onto the lake Monday ahead of the derby. When asked what his strategy was for where to put his shack he said it was to be closer to the judges tables than where he thought fish might be.

Little said the ice should continue to build as long as Saratoga keeps having cold nights.

The forecast is for lows in the teens to low 20s with a cooling trend as the derby approaches.
