Volunteers add much to our community

Generosity shines through during this time of year. The Festival of Trees was no exception.

Forty-three donations were made to the annual festival of trees and business people and residents of Saratoga and the Platte Valley pulled out their checkbooks to support this great event.

The festival is in its 11th year and is still going strong.

Every year, the Saratoga/Platte Valley Chamber of Commerce hosts the event and it continues to attract people and donations.

Considering the fact that other communities around the state has tried this and have either failed or discontinued the effort because of a lack of interest says something about our Chamber of Commerce and community.

Stacy Crimmins, who along with Marcy Knotwell who was the assistant at the chamber in 2003, were the brains of this event. Several organizations have benefited from the charity of this community because of this event.

Each year, the imagination of those donating trees, gift baskets and wreaths continues to grow and so do the donations.

This year, by our calculations, the chamber grossed a little more than $10,000. Of course, expenses have to be taken from that figure, but it is still a nice donation to organizations like the Saratoga Parent Teacher Organization and Grandma’s Cabin, this year’s benefactors.

The chamber and the board deserve a pat on the back for helping this tradition grow and succeed.

Next time you stop at the chamber office or in the business of one of the board members, be sure to let them know you appreciate their hard work on events like this. Also, let the people who made the purchases know they are appreciated.

While your at it, be sure to thank the Valley Service Organization for their part in the weekend activities including Winter Wonderland. Hours are spent decorating the community center and preparing the food for Winter Wonderland. All so children and parents can stand in line to tell Santa their wishes for Christmas.

Without people volunteering their time, events like this would not exist.
