PVCC promotes Small Business Saturday

The Platte Valley Community Center (PVCC) is using social media to promote Small Business Saturday, Nov. 29.

Joe Elder, Executive Director of the PVCC, said, “I was just trying to think of a way, from the community center perspective, to promote local shopping during the holiday season.”

The idea he came up with is to promote one local small business a day, starting on Wednesday, Nov. 19, on the PVCC Facebook Page. Anyone who shares the post promoting that days business will be entered into a drawing for a $20 gift certificate for that business. One winner will be picked each day of the contest.

The contest should have the added advantage of promoting the community center Facebook page as well.

Elder said it is important to keep holiday shopping revenues within the county.

County and town residents reap the rewards of sales tax disbursements and the participation of local businesses in the community.

“I live here, I want to promote the local businesses here as much as possible. Because that money multiplies and stays here in a lot of different ways.”

According to Elder, one of the town’s biggest sources of revenue is sales tax disbursement. He said the town can use that money for curbside improvement and infrastructure projects.

“When you leave the county and go to Laramie, Cheyenne or Casper the money does not stay in our community.”

Elder also said local businesses support many programs within the community and at local schools. He said this is particularly important to him because his children benefit from locally supported activities and educational programs.

“It’s the gift that keeps on giving, because if you’re buying locally that money stays here in the form of sales tax and that business is then going to then donate to something my kid might be doing at school,” Elder said.

According to Elder, his family has also made the personal commitment of doing all of their Christmas shopping in the Valley this year.

As of Friday, Elder already had 14 business that are officially participating in the promotion and at least 12 more that have verbally committed. The businesses are located in Saratoga, Encampment and Riverside.
