Quilt show, classes at PVCC

More than 80 quilts will be displayed at the Pieces of History Quilt Show Friday and Saturday at the Platte Valley Community Center.

The quilt show is sponsored by the Saratoga Museum and includes many quilts made by people in the Platte Valley.

One of the oldest quilts to be displayed is from 1895, Saratoga Museum Director Virginia Parker said.

"The quilts are different from last year," Parker said. "We have a lot of hand-sewn quilts locally made. It should be an interesting show."

Parker said that people have brought in several different designs of quilts including Dresden, patchwork fan, double wedding ring, embroidered and cross stitched quilts. Parker said there is also a grandma's flower garden quilt.

Two quilts to be displayed are coming from as far as Colorado, Parker said.

Also on display at the quilt show will be two friendship quilts. The friendship quilts were donated to the museum and are a part of its permanent collection.

"I want people to see the friendship quilts," Parker said. People will recognize many of the names on the quilt as the pioneers of the Platte Valley, one of the names is Pearl Shively, Parker added.

Museum board member Susan Speer, chairperson of the quilt show, has scheduled two classes during the quilt show.

On Friday, from 1 to 4 p.m., Becky Riley, of Laramie will teach a cupcake pincushion class. The cost of the class is $20 and includes a kit and pattern.

On Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Riley will teach the EZ Dresden table runner class. The cost is $30 and includes the pattern and template. Attendees are to provide the fabric for this class.

Riley recommends experienced quilters not cut their pattern pieces of the Dresden table runner before the class on Saturday.

Participants will need to bring their own sewing machine, scissors, thread and other sewing supplies for the class.

Class sizes are limited to 10 participants. To sign up, call the Saratoga Museum at 307-326-5511 or 307-710-3226.
