Thomas Herbert States

Thomas Herbert States, of Littleton, Colo., died on May 8, 2014 at home in the loving company of his family. He was born Oct. 16, 1944 in Laramie to Herbert James States Jr. and Guenevere Alese Gilfry States. Tom, the youngest of three boys, grew up in Saratoga. He attended Platte Valley High School where he excelled in sports and graduated in 1963.

In 1967 he received a Bachelor of Science in engineering from the University of Wyoming. He was first employed by The Boeing Company in Seattle, Wash., as a materials and structural design engineer on the Boeing 747 airliner. Later, he was a structural design engineer for Timpte (Trailers) Inc. of Denver. It was there he met and married Ann Marie Simons, his wife of 42 years.

Three daughters were born to this union; Terra Marie, Cristi Lyn, and Staci Ann who died in infancy. Tom recently retired from Lockheed Martin. His notable contributions to the company included engineering for the Titan launch vehicles, the "Curiosity" Mars landing module and reentry designs for space capsules. Tom was an avid sportsman and shared his love of hunting and fishing with his family and lifelong friends Tony Seahorn, of Fort Collins, and Nord , of Denver. 

Tom is survived by his wife, Ann Marie; daughters Terra (William) Rogers, of Beavercreek, Ohio and Cristi (Nate) Camp, of Seattle, Wash.; brothers Jack, of Lander and Jim of Saratoga. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Thomas and Peyton Rogers and Calla and Walter Camp. He was preceded in death by his parents and infant daughter. Cremation has taken place and a celebration of life is planned for later this summer.
