The Coming Power

The horse has seen its best day when it comes to being the power ahead of the plow. The horse has been man’s best friend and for sure work he is still, but the heavy work is being lifted from his shoulders by gasoline. The gasoline power machinery is slowly but surely taking up the heavy work.

This week, W.M. Engleheart of Encampment, who purchased 320 acres of land from D.S. Stout, on Cow Creek, shipped in the first gasoline tractor, which he will use to break up this land with. This machine will pull five plows and harrow the ground after it. It will travel at the rate of four miles per hour while pulling. The gasoline and oil consumption of this engine, for the amount of work it does in a day is not nearly as expensive as the hay and grain for the required number of horses that would turn as much soil.

In a very short time this power will be used to take the place of horses on all the big ranches in this valley as it has already taken the place of the plow horse on the big farms throughout the eastern states.

Renovation in progress at State Bath House

Renovation of the State Bath House is in progress this week, and repainting of the interior will shortly be underway. It is announced that once section of the bathrooms will be ready for use probably early next week, but the job will not be complete and the place formally opened until about May 1.

Many repairs on pipelines and plumbing have been found necessary, and this repair work is also in progress. Several places have been found where heavy two-inch lines have almost eaten away by the action of the steam from the springs, and a number of lines have had to be renewed.

The three frame buildings which will be remodeled for use by the lessee and bath house patrons are now practically in position, and carpenters will be engaged for a time in remodeling the interior of the cottages to get them in readiness for plastering. It will likely be several weeks before the contemplated improvements on these buildings can be completed.

Voters go to the polls today

Carbon County voters will go to the polls today to cast their ballots for a U.S. Representative to fill the seat vacated by Dick Cheney when he was appointed Secretary of Defense.
