Students earn state congressional medals

Nine Platte Valley youth were recognized by the Wyoming Congressional delegation for earning bronze, silver and gold Congressional Awards. Sen. Mike Enzi, Congresswoman Cynthia Lummis, Auditor Cindy Cloud, Treasurer Mark Gordon, and State Superintendent Cindy Hill presented the medals for initiative, service and achievement at a statewide ceremony held in Laramie.

Guy Erickson, of Encampment, earned a gold medal and served the community by providing food for families in need and mentoring youth. Brett Miller, a silver and gold medalist, also from Encampment, served as a tutor for children and worked to improve his free throw shooting percentage. Both gold medalists dedicated more than two years toward improving their community and will receive a $1,000 higher education scholarship and a trip to Washington, D.C. for the national ceremony in late June.

Bronze and silver medals were presented to KeeGan Johnson and Cassidy Little, both of Encampment, and Hunter Mason, of Saratoga, earned his silver medal. Volunteering at the local thrift shop, Bountiful Baskets and mentoring helped KeeGan achieve his goals, while Cassidy also mentored children and planned a three-day camping trip for her family. Hunter took more responsibility in raising swine and serving in the Congressional Award state office.

Saratoga resident, Sarah Burton, earned a bronze medal by completing various community beautification projects and mentoring elementary students at Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Konnar Knotwell, McKenzie Powell, Randa Sorensen, all of Encampment, also earned the bronze medal. Konnar mentored a young girl with horse showmanship skills and improved her personal roping techniques. Bountiful Baskets benefited from McKenzie's service hours as she helped unload and distribute fresh produce in addition to improving the aesthetics of the community. Randa created a personal budget and learned how to spend her money more wisely. She also became a role model for younger students while mentoring.

Each recipient was honored for setting challenging goals in the areas of voluntary public service, personal development, physical fitness and expedition/exploration.
