Friends in disguise

Many times, adults forget to look at things and people from a child’s perspective. For instance, it would have never have occurred to us at the Saratoga Sun that children would be frightened of firemen. We, as adults, know they are there to help during a fire.

To a child, a fireman in full gear may look like a giant yellow monster.

Last week, the Saratoga Fire Department went to Saratoga Elementary School and gave a gear presentation in conjunction with a fire drill.

One of the demonstrations included what a fireman looks like in full fire gear.

This allowed the children to see firemen — people most of the children knew — and what they look like dressed up for a fire.

The firemen also demonstrated their inability to hear well when they have on all that equipment. The firemen told the children to yell really loud so they could hear them.

Demonstrations like this are important, not only for children, but adults as well.

Many of these volunteers take time off from their “regular” jobs to do this kind of demonstration.

Volunteer firemen and women have been giving of their time for more than 90 years in Saratoga and more than 100 years in Encampment.

This weekend, they both responded to a fire in Encampment.

The firemen also respond to car accidents and have been busy lately. So please take the time to say “thanks”.
