Vehicle pileup closes I-80 for 18 hours

Wyoming State Patrol Troopers and first responders extricate two people from a crushed Subaru pinned between two semi-tractor trailers Sunday afternoon. As of Monday afternoon, it was determined at least 47 vehicles were involved in the pileup on Interstate 80.

Wyoming Highway Patrol Troopers are still attempting to identify how many vehicles were involved in a pileup around 2 p.m. Sunday on Interstate 80 seven miles east of Elk Mountain.

The crash was reported just before 2 p.m., Stephen Townsend with the Wyoming Highway Patrol reported in a press release Monday.

Interstate 80 was closed for about 18 hours and the pileup involved at least 47 vehicles, Townsend reported. The actual vehicle count may go up as the investigation progresses.

The pileup occurred after speeds had been reduced to 45 miles per hour during snowy, windy and icy conditions....
