Ferris making reputation

According to the Los Angeles Times, Ralph Ferris is putting Rawlins on the map, by claiming to be a citizen of Rawlins and cutting up capers in Los Angeles that would do credit to a citizen of a good big town. However, if Rawlins is keeping up with his reported capers they do not feel any too elated over the stunts that young speed maniac is pulling off. Of course we are not blaming Rawlins, with his being a citizen of that city.

The Times says that Ferris was again arrested for speeding and fined $200 and sentenced to five days in jail. Young Ferris is now out on bonds to appear for trial for manslaughter in May for the killing of a six year old boy in that city. Ferris begged to be allowed to see his mother after being sentenced and was put in charge of an officer and they found his mother at a matinee. She interceded for him and asked that the jail sentence be suspended so that she might bring him back to Wyoming with her to settle up some business matters in which the boy is interested.

According to the Times they have left Los Angeles and that Ferris is supposed to have made the remark that he would never be taken back for trial.

Two new guests at Hotel de Penland

A couple of Saratoga men are guests for the next few weeks of Sheriff Glenn Penland of Rawlins, as results of a series of robberies which has been committed here within the past couple of weeks or more. The men, Floyd Bernett, and Boyd Morgan, were charged with stealing a generator, battery, spark plugs, coil, and other loot to about the amount of $30.00, from equipment being used at the R.R. Crow saw mill here. The robbers had made several visits to the equipment, and Friday, two local deputies were waiting when they arrived for more loot.

The men were arrested, and Saturday afternoon given a hearing before Justice of the Peace Howard Corpening. They were sentenced to 30 days in the county jail, and were taken to Rawlins Saturday by Sheriff Penland. A third man, also thought to be connected with the robberies, was “floated” out of town, to remain permanently. It is said Bernett and Morgan were also not to return here.

212 citizens petition town to stop pumping hot water at hobo pool

One of the town’s most treasured and controversial possessions- Saratoga Mineral Hot Springs and Hobo Pool- is again the center of several heated arguments.

This time the disagreement is over the drilling of a well in the main hot water vein about 30 feet north of the springs. The well is to be used by the town to supply fresh water for the municipal swimming pool when it opens this summer.

A petition, signed by 212 persons from Saratoga, Encampment, Rawlins, Laramie, Rock Springs, and other places, claims that pumping from the well will “divert the hot water from this springs to the swimming pool, which is adjacent to the Hobo pool, and such procedure will affect the present spring (Hobo pool)”.

In a letter attached to the petition, the Carbon County Conservation Club said “We oppose any such diversion or tampering with the water feeding this spring or pool…We feel that such action will not only harm this spring, but will deprive many of the people who use this pool, from such use.

The pumping will also prove very detrimental to the public now and in the future.”

Mayor Richard T. Bucholz and members of the council said they would keep the petition under advisement, but that they felt the pumping would not harm the pool and they plan to use the well this summer. However, the councilmen stressed that if such pumping should effect the flow of the spring, the well would be capped immediately.

Previously, water for the swimming pool was pumped from the northwest end of the wading pool. Councilmen say this procedure was unsanitary and had to be discontinued.

Closing on Saratoga Inn purchase set for April 17

An Idaho Springs resort owner has agreed to purchase the Saratoga Inn resort, according to KeyBank of Rawlins president Gene McMillen.

Max well had put money down towards the purchase of the Saratoga Inn and was allowed a two-week period to make a final decision.

McMillen said the two week period was over last week and said closing on the deal is set for April 17.

McMillen couldn’t say exactly when the popular resort will be open for business, however he speculated it would be within two to three weeks from the closing date. Maxwell was in between Saratoga and Idaho Springs at press time and couldn’t be reached for comment.
