Spiering takes first in Douglas

Saratoga’s Thatcher Spiering took home a first-place medal from USA Wrestling’s Junior State Greco-Roman/Freestyle Championships in Douglas.

The tournament March 7-8 qualified the first-place wrestler in the Freestyle division to be part of the Wyoming Cultural Exchange Team, which travels to Berlin, Germany this year. Wrestlers from across Wyoming were present for the event, which featured both Greco-Roman and Freestyle wrestling, and Spiering and Thomas Ingleby were the two from Saratoga to compete.

Spiering received his first place in the Greco-Roman division, and followed up with third in the Freestyle division.

“This was Thatcher’s first time ever wrestling Greco-Roman or Freestyle,” said Luke Spiering, Thatcher’s father and coach. “Thomas also hadn’t wrestled much Greco or Freestyle, so it was a big deal for him to go in there as a freshman up against seniors and state placers from 2A, 3A and 4A. Going in there with older kids had to be intimidating. It was a junior state tournament, but you could be a senior in high school and wrestle in the two tournaments.”

Spiering said both boys are headed to Denver this weekend to compete in the Rocky Mountain Nationals.

“Both kids need the extra mat time, so this will help them in the long run,” he said. Results from the two-day tournament are shown below:
