Encampment ProStart team brings home gold

Encampment K-12 School's ProStart management team students became state champions at the Student Invitational Culinary Competition March 3.

The event took place at the Hilton Garden Inn Laramie, and was put on by the Wyoming Lodging and Restaurant Association Education Foundation. Members of the management team, consisting of Matt Jarrett, David Flauding, Harold Jackson, Brett Ralston and alternate Jacob Wells, all took home first-place medals from the event. Ty Trevillian helped with their floor plan and layout, and Pam Kraft assisted the team with the visual storyboard design.

ProStart student Randa Sorensen took home an individual second place medal in the "Code of the West"-themed baking competition, for her baked cake, bread and artisan bread. Tessa Pickett helped her with the professional cake decorating.

The school's ProStart culinary team, consisting of Jarrett, Jackson, Jacob Sturgis, Kaylyn Wessel and alternate Brett Miller, took home third place. Other helpers and mentors for the students included Ryan Finney and Cassie Orduno, who helped work on the menu.

Cheryl Munroe, Encampment teacher and ProStart coach, said the team now needs to raise money to attend the National ProStart Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn., put on by the National Restaurant Association May 3. Munroe is also Encampment K-12 School's family and consumer science teacher, and served as a mentor and helper for her students at the March 3 competition.

As a fundraiser toward the national invite, Munroe brought up having a special dinner at the Grand Encampment Opera House.

"I've got to get a hold of the Opera House to try and put a meal on there, and we'll probably have the management kids present the proposal," she said. "We'll probably put on a nice sit down meal at the Opera House."
