'Thunder snow' plays havoc

Dan Gilbert, a meteorologist with Weather Modification Inc., who is working out of Saratoga, said Sunday’s weather is referred to as “thunder snow”.

“It’s hard to forecast,” Gilbert said. “They usually happen after a warm period when the surface is warm.”

With the warm air hovering near on bottom, cold air moves above it creating thunder.

Though Gilbert said that these thunder storm is much less severe than summer thunder storms, the storms managed to knock out power in the Platte Valley
