Encampment K-12 celebrates "End of the World"

Students at Encampment K-12 School saw 'dead people' last week.

2014 Homecoming week was dubbed "The End of the World" and students seemed to have fun during the week by dressing as zombies and corpses.

Throughout the week of Jan. 27-31, students came to school dressed appropriately for the school's themed days, consisting of "Pajama Day", "Funeral Day", "Survivor Day", "Zombie Day" and "Red and Black Day". The entire school also participated in "Penny Wars", a contest to see which class in K-12 could donate and raise the most money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Members of the Encampment K-12 School staff also agreed to dye and cut their hair if the school reached its goal of $2,200 through the Penny Wars.

Friday's after-school festivities included a pep rally, which included school cheers, a "bad food" eating contest and a "buddy dragging" race. The school was able to reach the $2,200 Penny Wars goal, so during the pep rally, sixth-grade teacher Jordan Seitz had his head buzzed into a mohawk, and receptionist Cori Tiezen, third-grade teacher Kathy Lynch and math teacher Nanette Marchetti had their hair dyed orange, green and red.

The school contributed $1,591, and the $609 needed to make up the goal was donated by Ryan and Ashley Grabow.

After the pep rally, Encampment's boys' and girls' basketball teams faced off against Saratoga for the second time this season. The varsity Tigers beat the Panthers 64-43, while the varsity Lady Panthers beat the Lady Tigers 48-32.

Saturday brought more fun to the Encampment K-12 gym, starting off with Tiger games against Little Snake River's Rattlers. Although the varsity Tigers lost 38-62, and the varsity Lady Tigers lost 24-44, both teams put up a solid fight.

Following the game was the ceremonial Homecoming Coronation, where Matt Jarrett and Jennifer Morgan were crowned as the Homecoming King and Queen. Senior attendants were Brett Miller and Becca Treat; junior attendants were Jacob Sturgis and Sierra Watkins; sophomore attendants were Hunter Hammer and Randa Sorensen; freshman attendants were Ashley Turner and Tylr Kozelisky; and kindergarten attendants were Dashaal Baysinger and Samantha Anderson.

Folks from all over the Platte Valley then participated in a cake auction, where they could browse and bid on unique cakes made by locals in the community. After the auction was the Homecoming Dance at the Grand Encampment Opera House, where local students danced the night away to their favorite tunes.
