Speech team receives accolades in Evanston

The Carbon County School District No. 2 Speech Team returned from last weekend’s speech meet with feathers in the cap.

Head coach Brenda Ostendorf said she was proud of her team as they beat two 4A schools at the meet in Evanston.

Ostendorf said the Evanston meet did not classify 1A/2A schools. “They had big schools and small schools, and the small schools were much bigger than ours.”

Although the team did not return with a trophy they did return with some high compliments from the judges.

Lydia Smith in Extemporaneous speech was complimented for her “great use of hands gestures to illustrate point and effective diction.”

Nick Smith, who also competed in Extemporaneous speech was told he had a impressive speaking voice and clearly explained the topic.

Kaylyn Wessel was simply described as “awesome” for her Drama piece.

Kat Hytrek and Becca Hayward competed with their Duet and was told “Fun blocking … loved your posture and facial expressions.”

Garrett Dale, who competed in Impromptu was told “Great approach to your topic … relaxed, confident, but still focused and passionate.”

Nina Ford received praise for delivering ideas clearly and professional in the Lincoln Douglas debate.

Gabby Clutter was told her voice was nice and soft in the Poetry competition.

Maya Zeiger competed in Drama and was told she portrayed “Good emotion, made me feel like I was in her story.”

Becca Treat received this high praise from the judges: “Your voice, your topic, your poise … all contributed … you were hitting on all cylinders.”

Tylr Kozlinsky and Garrett Dale compete in Duet and received this compliment. “Loved how you played off of each other!”

Aleck Freeman competed in Drama and was told he did a great job of going from one scene to the next.

Leam Engel received praise for his Oratory piece, “Never thought I would be so moved re-living the movies of my children!”

Gale Jackson, for his Humor piece, was told “Transitions very fluent … great job!”

Jacob Dickinson was complimented for his “Good roller coaster effect … a great orator,” in his Orator piece.

The speech team will compete at Natrona High School is Casper Jan. 31 and Feb. 1.
