VSO blood drive coming

The upcoming United Blood Services blood drive was discussed at Thursday’s meeting of the Valley Service Organization (VSO), sponsor of the project.

The drive is scheduled from noon to 5:30 p.m., Jan. 28, in the Great Hall at the Platte Valley Community Center. Roxie Baldwin is chairman of the project.

Previous donors are now being contacted for appointments through emails and telephone calls, she said. Persons who wish to make an appointment and haven’t been contacted, or who wish to make sure their preferred time is available may also sign up online by logging on to http://www.bloodhero.com (sponsor code toga).

In other business, the group learned from Giving Tree committee member Dawna Erickson that the 2013 project served 26 families (22 in 2012) representing 69 children (58). Eight groups “adopted” families (10 in 2012). In addition, cash donations received enabled VSO to purchase 26 $50 gift cards at Valley Foods, she said.

Upcoming projects for VSO include the 2014 health fair, Women of Distinction recognition and Youth Citizenship Award. There is also a possibility that the Saratoga Sweetheart Squawkers may also make an appearance this year.

VSO meets for lunch the second and fourth Thursdays of the month at noon in the back room at the Hotel Wolf. Persons interested in learning more about the organization or who wish to join the group are always welcome to attend, according to Cathy Westring, VSO president.
