Speech team earns back to back 1A/2A championships

The Carbon County School District No. 2 Speech Team went into winter break as 1A/2A champions and started off 2014 with a 1A/2A championship.

On Dec. 20 and 21, the speech team traveled to Cheyenne East High School Tournament to compete against 30 schools and 1100 team members from Wyoming, Colorado and Georgia. The members were evaluated by 225 judges comprised of college professors, former upper level varsity competitors and accomplished community members according to head coach Brenda Ostendorf.

The duet team of Becca Treat and Kaylyn Wessel placed in the quarterfinals at the Dec. 20 meet, which also qualified them for the Tournament of Champions in Minneapolis in May.

Gabby Clutter and Nina Ford ranked placement in the top eight speakers in the first round of Student Congress. The Dec. 20 meet was the first meet in which Clutter and Ford competed in the Congress session. Clutter and Ford competed against 25 to 30 experienced regional speakers, Ostendorf said.

Gale Jackson placed second in a novice humor round. Kat Hytrek and Becca Hayward received a first place ranking in their first round of novice duet competition.

Treat and Aleck Freeman used their experience as varsity members to judge the ascending layers of difficulty among the 30 novice teams in the categories of drama, poetry, humor, oratory and extemporaneous speaking, Ostendorf said.

“Determination and persistence to improve continue to be a trademark of the speech team members,” Ostendorf said.

Hytrek received Academic student of the month for her endeavors in academics, activities and varsity mentoring, Ostenddorf said.

William Paddock, Joshua Wood and LeAnn Uhling have been volunteering to work with selected individuals to help the team prepare for speech meets, Ostendorf said. Jerry Dickinson has also assisted students in preparing for extemporaneous and congress competitions. The team now has competitors expanding into the Lincoln Douglas debate, Ostendorf said.

Ostendorf reported the speech won the 1A/2A championship at the Jan. 3 and 4 meet, but results were not available as of press time.
