Chamber ready for fishing derby

It’s that time a year again for anglers to brave the cold the frozen landscape and show of their fishing skills. The 31st annual Saratoga Ice Fishing Derby will take place on Jan. 18 and 19 at Saratoga Lake.

Ice fishing enthusiasts will have the opportunity to pit their fishing abilities against each other, but will also have the ability to win cash prizes. The competition for the largest fish caught during derby hours will come with a $2,000 prize, second place will receive $1,000 and third place will get $500. Cash prizes for a “Bounty Fish” will be given during the competition as well as hourly winners for largest fish and other door prizes.

Children under the age of 14 are eligible to win prizes in the “Small fry” division where they will have an opportunity to win a grand prize of $100 and a merchandise package.

For those who do more “fishing” and not enough “catching” during the derby, there are still opportunities to win awards. Back by popular demand, the “Best Hut” contest will be presented to the person with the most eye catching and creative hut on the lake. Furthermore, many will have an opportunity to tell their tales of angling past in the “Best Fishing Story” contest. Winner of the Best Hut competition and the Best Fishing Story contest will receive bragging rights for the next year.

The derby will take place from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Jan. 18 and 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 19. Concessions will be available at the lake all weekend.

To enter the Saratoga Fishing Derby, registration is $30 for adult and $10 for kids under 14. Forms for registrations can be picked up at local retail stores that sell fishing licenses, at the Saratoga/Platte Valley Chamber office or at the Saratoga Lake Saturday morning starting at 6 a.m.
