Killing on Pass Creek

Mrs. Hawkins, a colored woman in the employ of James Dickinson on Pass Creek, shot and instantly killed a colored man by the name of Jackson, also employed by Dickinson. She claims that Jackson came in the house drunk and wanted her to run off with him, she refused. They had a quarrel and he left the house in a rage, telling her he would kill her if she came out. Later when she had occasion to go out she took a rifle and when she stepped out of door, Jackson was setting on a log with a revolver in his hand which he tried to aim at her, but she was too quick for him and fired killing him instantly. The shooting occurred Thanksgiving Day. After the inquest Mrs. Hawkins was taken to Rawlins where she will be held for trial. Her husband is now serving a sentence in the county jail for an assault he committed in Hanna some time ago.

Corum trying to get back in jail

Apprehended at Laramie last Saturday, Pharies B. “Fuss” Corum of Encampment is again in the toils of the law, having allegedly written another “rubber check.” Newspaper reports say Corum was arrested at the request of Carbon County officials, as result of having written a fraudulent check for $550 in payment for a used car he purchased from the Frank M. Johnston Motor Co. in Rawlins. He is said to have used the signature of his mother, Mrs. Minnie C. Corum, postmistress at Encampment, who refused to honor the check.

Corum has been arrested several times on fraudulent check charges. He was arrested the first time for forging a government check. Parolled to a Cripple Creek, Colo. man, he later passed a fraudulent check on the man to whom he was parolled.

Thieves took $230 from school safe in Encampment

Thieves took about $230 from the safe in the superintendent’s office of the Encampment school either Wednesday night or early Thanksgiving morning, Supt. C.A. Allen reported this week.

Deputy Sheriff Mike Blake said the person or persons who took the money entered the building after prying open a door on the fire escape. Access to the money was gained after the thieves cut out the bottom of the safe with a cold chisel. Marks on the safe also indicated that unsuccessful attempts were made to pry open the door, before the bottom was removed.

Several checks and papers in the safe were left on the floor in Mr. Allen’s office.

The school closed Wednesday for the Thanksgiving weekend and the theft was not discovered until Friday morning, according to Mr. Blake. The sheriff’s office is investigating the burglary, but to date no arrests have been made.

Patterson recuperating at home

A Saratoga man who lost a portion of his right leg in an accident at Louisiana Pacific’s Saratoga sawmill in late Oct. is recuperating at home.

Michael Patterson, 35, was released from Memorial Hospital of Carbon County in Rawlins one week from the day his lower right leg had to be amputated. The accident occurred on Oct. 28 when a log chain failed to lock out and Patterson said his leg is healing well, and noted he hopes to be fitted for a prosthesis in four to six weeks, depending on how fast the healing process takes. He said he plans to return to work as soon as his doctor approves it.

Patterson’s foot and a portion of his leg was caught in the chain.
