Two elderly voters

Saratoga has two old gentlemen that voted a good many years at the presidential election before Taft, Teddy or Wilson were ever thought of as even possible candidates. J.M. Sterret one of the men voted his first time in 1848 for Taylor who was elected at the time. He has voted continually ever since except the first time Cleveland ran. He was on hand Tuesday and cast another vote and from the looks of him at this time we would not be surprised to see him vote at one or two more presidential elections, although he is 88 years of age. J.W. Moore is the other and cast his first vote for Pierce in 1852. Pierce was elected and we have a happy thought that possibly Mr. Moore voted this time of the winning candidate.

Former resident here killed at Seminoe Dam

Another casualty resulted Monday at Seminoe Dam, when LeRoy Hunter, 24 years old and a former resident here, plunged 185 feet to his death. Hunter was a member of a night crew working on the dam, and lost his footing while he and a companion were working with some heavy timbers near the top of the dam.

Hunter was acquainted with several people in Saratoga, having been stationed here a few years ago with a CCC company. He was the husband of the former Viola Owens of Hanna, who also made her home in Saratoga for a time. She was employed at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Faes when Faes was S. & E. agent here. Hunter is survived by his widow and a baby, his father, two brothers, and two sisters.

$40 now in scout fund

To date, $40 in contributions to the current Boy and Girl Scout fund drive in Saratoga has been received by the local Lions Club who sponsor the Scouting program here. According to J.R. Stephenson and Lewis Pennock, drive committeemen, contribution cards were mailed last week. They urge everyone to reply.

Nearly 100 local boys and girls, active in the Saratoga Scouting program, will benefit from a donation to the drive. A portion of all funds received remains in Saratoga with the remainder to be forwarded to state and council offices of the BSA.

Panthers to face Hanna in

basketball season opener

With ten returning lettermen from last year, the Saratoga High School Boys Basketball team will face Hanna High School Friday night in their season opener.

“We have somewhat of a rival with Hanna; they consistently produce a good team and it should be a battle,” said third year coach Mike Nerland.

Among those ten members are two Rocky Mountain Athletic All-Conference players, 6’5” center Jeremy Spicer and guard 6’1” Judd Campbell. Both seniors will start in Friday’s game beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the Saratoga Middle School gymnasium.

“We moved Campbell to the outside this year. He is a good ball handler and all-around player,” said Nerland.

Assisted by Bobby Johnston and Ross Ashburn, the Panthers who finished 12-7 last year, are looking ahead to beat Mountain View High School who may be the team to beat this year.

Participating in the Southwest 2-A league the Panthers will face Big Piney, Pinedale, Lyman, and Mountain View in conference play in their 16 game schedule.

Nederland said “With our deep bench, including three juniors and two sophomores, and consistent play, I am looking forward to a competitive year.”

The junior varsity game will precede the varsity with tip-off at 6 p.m.
