Club Notes: American Legion Auxiliary

The local American Legion Auxiliary of Saratoga covered charitable contributions and upcoming events at their most recent meeting Oct. 15.

Membership stands at 33 members with 10 more needed to meet the first milestone by Nov. 11. Ladies should get their dues paid so the goal can be made early this year.

Thirty-three dozen cookies were sent to Cheyenne for the VA Hospital patients. We can always send more, so if someone missed baking some cookies, they can still get that done and we will get them to Cheyenne. The VA patients enjoy the homemade cookies.

There will be a special meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 26 in honor of the Department President’s official visit. Shareen Johnson of Lander is the American Legion Auxiliary Department President for the 2013-14 year. We will have a carry-in dinner with the meat being provided. Members attending are asked to provide the side dishes.

Member-donated cookies and cupcakes will be provided for the American Legion “Haunted House” for the community children. The donations need to be to the Legion home on or before Oct. 30.

The American Legion will be providing ham and roast beef with cake for dessert at the Veterans Day Dinner on Nov. 9. The auxiliary has been asked to provide sides of salads or vegetables to be taken to the Legion home the day of the dinner.

The auxiliary will hold food raffles every Friday evening starting Nov. 1 at the Legion home. A sign-up sheet is at the Legion home and proceeds go to the VA Hospital in Cheyenne for the veterans.

District 6 President Pam Freeman made her official visit to the unit at our Oct. 15 meeting. She talked about plans for a District 6 newsletter and history of membership decline. She congratulated Unit 54 for awards for publicity, appreciation, warrior and child welfare and membership cooperation in having the “Unit President of the Year.” Her theme this year is that District 6 is going to have a “whopper” of a great year.

Refreshments were served following the meeting.
