Remains found in Snowy Range

A human skull and bones were found near Silver Lake in the Snowy Range this weekend.

A hunter reported the find. Carbon County Sheriff Deputies and search and rescue personnel searched the area and collected and marked anything that looked human, Carbon County Sheriff Jerry Colson said.

The search turned up a skull, lower jaw and some bones, Colson said. “They searched the area thoroughly.”

Colson said he doubts that the remains are those of Charles Gustafson, a hunter from Minnesota who was separated from his hunting party on Oct. 11, 2006. Gustafson and his family were hunting eight miles south of Arlington.

Gustafson is believed to have been in the Rock Creek area, which is quite a ways north of where the remains were found.

“I am not ruling it out, that it might be Charley,” Colson said. A fisherman discovered Gustafson’s rifle near Arlington in the Rock Creek Area a few years ago.
