Starr fundraiser kicks off

By Doug Radunich

The Carbon County Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans is sponsoring a fundraiser for Saratoga resident and cancer patient Marilyn Starr this month.

The fundraiser is intended to help Starr with her ongoing medical expenses caused by endometrial cancer. Merle Starr, Marilyn’s mother, said Marilyn has been unable to work and had to make frequent trips to Salt Lake City for specialized cancer treatments.

“She had had cancer for over three years now, and she’s had to go out 340 miles to the Huntsman Cancer Center in Salt Lake City every month for the last three months,” Merle said. “Ever since she got sick she has stayed with me, and she has no income because she has not been able to work. She has gone through a lot of treatment, including radiation and chemotherapy, and that can take a lot out of a person.”

Donation cans are located at several Saratoga businesses, including Valley Foods, Shively Hardware, Hat Creek Trading Post, Hack’s Tackle and Outfitters, Saratoga-Platte Valley Chamber of Commerce and Kum and Go. The fundraiser began last week and runs until Sunday, Aug. 18.

Proceeds from the collected funds will be supplemented by Thrivent Financial For Lutherans, a faith-based, non-profit membership organization for financial services, with chapters nationwide and offices in Wisconsin and Minnesota. Checks should be written to Carbon County Chapter of Thrivent.
