Historians and homemade art lovers can view a variety of old and new handmade quilts at the Saratoga Museum-sponsored Pieces of History Quilt Show called “Treasured Quilts, Old and New, Let Us Show Them Off for You”, held this weekend at the Platte Valley Community Center.
This is the fifth year the show will be presented, and people from all over Wyoming will showcase different handmade and homemade quilts, Susan Speer, Quilt Show Committee Chairman, said.
“People from all over the state, but mostly Carbon County, will bring quilts for us to display, and visitors from all over come to look,” she said. “We’ll have some antique quilts and ones that people have recently made themselves, and we’ll have quilts passed down through families to show. There will be two quilts passed down through the Shively and Glode family, and three passed down through the Shadrick family.”
In addition to quilt displays, Speer said the show features a lecture on the origin of Japanese fabrics presented by Debi Wada at 10 a.m. Saturday, and demonstrations on Mexican Stars quilting, a dimensional quilt pattern by Nancy Wallis at 10 a.m. Friday and hand quilting by Beckie Manley at 2 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
Speer said there would be a demonstration on English paper piecing at the show by Manley.
Raffles tickets will be sold for a quilt called the “Woodland Sampler”. Proceeds will benefit the Saratoga Museum.
“A Saratoga quilt group called the ‘Sew & Sews’ made the quilt that people can buy raffle tickets for,” Speer said. “Tickets are $1 per person, or it’s $5 for six tickets.”
The quilt show is $3 per person, with children 12 and younger free of charge, and runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the PVCC.
Tickets are available at the Saratoga Museum, Saratoga Library, Century 21 Cornerstone Realty and the Saratoga Sun. The drawing for the Woodland Sampler is Labor Day, and all proceeds go to benefit the Saratoga Museum.
A members-only showing, complete with a wine and cheese sampling co-sponsored by Valley Foods, is from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday evening at the PVCC.
