Old Time Ranch Tour coming to Encampment

The Laramie Kiwanis Club’s Annual Old Time Ranch Tour of 2013 is headed to Encampment this year, with hopes of giving participants a better visual idea of Platte Valley ranch history.

For the 2013 tour, participants meet their guides at the turnoff from Highway 127 to Highway 125 in Colorado, which is west of Woods Landing, north of Walden and south of Encampment. The turnoff is close to the Colorado/Wyoming state border and almost halfway between Encampment and Laramie.

From there, the tour heads to Big Creek Ranch, where Mark Dunning will talk about the ranch and its history. Next, the tour heads to the Encampment Museum, where John Varner will talk about the history of Encampment and the great copper mine, followed by tours of the museum.

The group will then have lunch at the museum grounds and the adjacent Encampment Park, where a cowboy poetry event sponsored by the Encampment Lions Club takes place.

The Lions Club has welcomed our guest to check out their booths and buy food that is sold at the event.

After lunch, the group heads out to Silver Spur Ranch overlook (Cow Creek Ranch), where people will have a view of the valley, and Irena Archer will tell about the history of the ranch.

Everyone is invited to the tour and attendance is free. Participants meet at 9:30 a.m. on July 20, and additional details can be found on the Laramie Kiwanis website at laramiekiwanis.org. Each year, the Ranch Tour provides Wyoming and Northern Colorado residents an opportunity to learn about ranch history.
