Gates resigns: Board of trustees approves letter effective end of 2013/14 school year

Superintendent Bob Gates submitted a letter of resignation to Carbon County School District No. 2 last week.

The CCSD No. 2 School Board of Trustees approved Gates’ resignation effective at the end of the 2013/2014 school year in a bulk action on the board’s consent agenda Monday. The action also approved two other resignations from Hanna Elk Mountain Medicine Bow Junior/Senior High School science teacher Kathy Hansen and Medicine Bow Elementary School teacher Thomas Waring.

Board members chose not to discuss items on the consent agenda, including Gates’ resignation.

Gates said his resignation had nothing to do with his decisions to realign staff through attrition or other budgeting tasks. He said those decisions were part of the job.

“I have made those decisions before, and they aren’t fun decisions to make, but they have to be made,” Gates said.

Gates said he will resign at the end of the 2013/2014 school year, partially because all of his children have graduated high school.

“(I am) just ready to try some different things, and my youngest just graduated and that was a key piece,” he said.

Gates said another key reason he chose to resign is he met the requirements for retirement last year.

Gates said he doesn’t know exactly what his plans are when he leaves the district, but wants to try something different.

He said he doesn’t know if he will leave the education field or try a different position within the field.

Gates started working for CCSD No. 2 June 2006 after leaving a position from Crook County.
