Fulfilling 'other duties': Town hall staff, other departments come together to clean up Vets Island

Saratoga Town Hall employees ventured outside their job descriptions Friday to help other town departments clean up Veterans Island Friday.

At any given time, Mayor John Zeiger, Treasurer Joe Elder, Clerk Suzie Cox and Public Works Director Chuck Bartlett were out doing something to improve the state of Veterans Island.

Along with several other employees, Zeiger, Elder, Cox and Bartlett helped rejuvenate the walkway, paint the barbeque hut, replenish the wood chips in the play area, rake, mow the grass and pick up trash.

Bartlett said he has been planning to get everyone together for the overhaul project since last year.

“We have a lot of stuff to get cleaned up and we don’t have enough people to do it,” Bartlett said. “To get it done, we brought in everybody from the streets department, water department and the town hall staff.”

However, the town’s initiative to pick up Saratoga is still not through. Bartlett said the town is planning to bring everyone back together to get the Saratoga Lake area cleaned up before the Fourth of July.

Town Hall officials are also planning to help out with that project as well.

“It builds commodity, gets everybody together. We are doing something good for the community that otherwise wouldn’t get done,” Elder said.

Although the work is technically not in Town Hall employees’ job descriptions, Elder thinks it is still their duty to make the town look nice.

“It is in the sense of ‘All other duties,’ so it is kind of in our job description,” Elder said.

The town is also seeking volunteers for future clean-up projects. Call the Saratoga Town Hall, 307-326-8335, for more information.
