Carbon County athletes place high at Special Olympics

istrict No. 2 Special Olympic Team received several top 10 placements at the Special Olympic State Games in Laramie May 16-18.

More than 600 athletes from all of Wyoming competed in the three-day event. For the CCSD 2 team, nine-year-old Amanda Musacchio from Encampment School received third place in the 50 meter dash, fifth place in the 100 meter dash and fourth place in the running long jump. This year was Musacchio’s first year competing in the Special Olympic games.

Kenny Wohl , a 17-year-oldfrom HEM School, competed in his third year at the Special Olympics. Wohl earned sixth place in the softball throw, second place in the 50 meter dash, third place in the 100 meter dash and fourth place in the standing long jump.

Joshua Fowler, an 18-year-old from HEM School, competed in his fourth Special Olympic year. Fowler earned four gold medals and four silver medals in the running long jump, 50 meter dash, 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, power lifting squat, bench press, dead lift and combined bench press and dead lift score. His combined power-lifting score was higher than any other athlete’s score.

The CCSD 2 team’s athletes and their families enjoyed the camaraderie of fellow athletes, and the banquet and dance on the evening of the 17th, said Deb Riker, Special Education Director with CCSD 2.

They look forward to competing again next year, and having several other athletes join them, Riker said.
