Airport board continues developing Master Plan

The Saratoga Airport Board is about half way through the process of adopting a master plan, but there is still plenty of time to be heard for those who are interested in the future of the airport.

“We are still in the decision-making process,” said Mike Haak, a consultant from Aeroland Planning.

The airport board and Haak held an informal open house meeting April 15 to explain to the public what is in the proposed master plan for the airport, a plan that defines how the airport could develop during the next 20 years.

“It is a development process over the duration of a time over the next 20 years, based on funding and the town’s desire,” Haak said.

About five people showed up to the meeting, half the turnout from the last meeting, Haak said. But the energy and discussion in the meeting was insightful.

“I think we are doing pretty good to getting our finger on the pulse on how the public sees the airport,” Haak said.

Residents who did show up made helpful comments, Haak said. Most who showed up to the meeting had questions and concerns about the proposed development of a business park and future access to the airport.

Although there were some concerns, no one seemed to be completetly opposed to any of the ideas in the development of the new airport master plan.

“I’d say it was about a 50/50 mix,” Haak said. “There were not any outstanding negative comments that were a red flag that would stop the process.”

The Airport Board will continue to coordinate with Haak to work on the master plan. Haak said he is working on a chance to present the current draft of the master plan to the Saratoga Town Council in May or April. The next regular airport board meeting is 1 p.m. May 8 at the Saratoga Town Council chambers.
