District needs creativity

Saratoga Sun Editorial

Although Carbon County School District No. 2 is in a tough position with its budget, district officials need to carefully consider where to cut the $15 million budget.

The district identified at least $160,000, or two full-time teaching positions, it needs to cut from the budget. Cutting personnel is an option the district needs to avoid if possible, especially if the cuts are to affect art-based programs.

Studies have shown students who are involved in the arts have better test scores. These Children are four times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement, three times more likely to be elected to class office in their schools, four times more likely to participate in a math or science fair and three times more likely to win an award for school attendance.

If anything, CCSD 2 should consider expanding art programs in schools district wide.

Offering K-12 art-based programs, whether it be visual or musical, could make the district more attractive for parents and students, thus giving the district an opportunity to increase enrollment.

CCSD 2 faces challenges when cutting 1 percent from the budget. Officials have to look closely at other budgetary items, like in-school meals, after-school activities and insurance, all things important to teachers and children.

However, education is the No. 1 thing for children in school, and teachers are an essential part of a child’s education.

Creativity is important to bolster in our children and we believe that with a little creative budget thinking, CCSD 2 can maintain or even expand a high level of education.
