  • Nickels and dimes in the sky

    Mike Armstrong|Dec 5, 2018

It is the start of the holiday season and for many that means traveling by air to get to a desired destination. I don’t know about you, but I used to love to have the adventure of going on an airplane trip. When I was a tyke, because one set of my folks lived in Houston and the other set in D.C., my sister and I flew by ourselves at least half a dozen times. On those flights, I can remember getting to visit the pilot cabin and getting toy airplanes. I doubt either practice happens in this day a...

    Stacy Crimmins|Dec 5, 2018

The last economic development block in the third layer is ENTREPRENEUR DEVELOPMENT. This is similar to the adjacent block, Existing Business Development, but focuses on start-ups, new ventures and development of innovative products and services. At one time or another, most of us would have been considered an entrepreneur--your first lemonade stand, babysitting or mowing lawns. The skills you learn when you are young stay with you your entire life: time management, customer service, financial planning, imagination and problem solving to name a...

  • Lady Panthers ready to remake history

    Joshua Wood|Dec 5, 2018

The last few years have been rough for the Saratoga Lady Panthers when it comes to basketball. They haven't had a conference win since the 2014/2015 season and last year they only had three non-conference wins. It was 1981 the last time the Lady Panthers won a state title and the last time they showed up at the State Tournament was in 1983. Each season, however, is another chance, another possibility at rewriting history. Last year, the girls had seven girls on their varsity roster and were...

  • Wish list: A trip to State

    Joshua Wood|Dec 5, 2018

The season may just be starting for the Saratoga Panthers, but that does little to diminish their goals for the year according to Jason Williams, head coach of the Panthers, as they hope to make another showing at the State Championship. "Another trip to State, ultimately, is what our goal is for the end of the year," said Williams. "If we make it to State tournament, put together three good days of basketball and see what happens. Definitely, a return to State is on our minds." During the...

  • Building and rebuilding

    Joshua Wood|Dec 5, 2018

The Encampment Lady Tigers return to the court this year following a third place finish last season at the State Championship. This season the Encampment girls will be playing without Hailey Barkhurst, Cheyanne Jordan, Kayla Wagy and Micaiah Pantle, who all graduated last year. Another unexpected loss, which took place shortly before the school year, was that of Paige Powell when her family moved to Cody. "Obviously we've got some difficulties," said Clint Bromley, head coach of the Lady Tigers....

  • One game at a time

    Joshua Wood|Dec 5, 2018

Last year, the Encampment Tigers went to the State Championships and came home after placing third, but every new season presents new challenges. This year, the challenge for the Tigers will have nothing to do with low numbers as they boast a total of 16 student athletes on their roster. What the Tigers may have to work to overcome this year will be how to play the game without Wyatt Cox. Cox, who was a senior last season, led the team in rebounds with 226 rebounds. There are, however, other...

She tempered her optimism with acknowledging her team was young and that only four girls from last year's team are returning. "With only four returning players, three of which are sophomores, once again, the team is mostly freshman and sophomores," Jones said. "Saying that, we aren't going go out there and play the...

  • Talent on the mat

    Mike Armstrong|Dec 5, 2018

Saratoga High School (SHS) head wrestling coach Zach Schmidt is excited with the wrestling team that is getting ready to hit the mats this year. "This group has the most talent I have seen in about four years," Schmidt said. "Top to bottom we have good experience, but their biggest question is; can they come together and compete as a team?" He said the squad is out to help each other in a team effort. "If your 106 pounder doesn't perform as expected, your 113 pounder can say, 'don't worry, I...

"Our team goals this year are to make a showing at State," said Mercer. "The girls have expressed a desire to place at or win State, if at all possible. We have some girls that, they've set individual goals ... knowing how they did last year and...
