  • Valley food pantry gets help filling shelves

    Liz Wood|Dec 5, 2012

Peg McAlister, Platte Valley Food Pantry volunteer, was flabbergasted when Susan Speer, with the Carbon County Board of Realtors, presented her with a $500 check Friday. “Am I reading that right?” McAlister asked Speer. The donation from the realtors will make Christmas better for people who may otherwise not have had a merry Christmas. McAlister is expecting a shipment of hams, ordered through Valley Foods, to come in for Christmas. The food pantry also orders from Food Bank of Wyoming, out... Full story

    Joe Elder|Dec 5, 2012

The public will get a chance to weigh in on the new Airport Master Plan at three public workshops, starting next Wednesday. The last Airport Master Plan was completed in 1998. The purpose of the meeting is to introduce the master plan to the public and Michael Haak, of Aeroland Planning, LLC, is hoping for input from locals. “As an outsider looking in, I can’t tell the community what they need to do,” Haak said. “A big part of the workshop is to get it out there that this is a public process... Full story

  • Discovering the why of adventure

    Tom Dixon|Dec 5, 2012

For the last couple summers, my girlfriend, Sheila, and I have been putting up cyclists in our home thanks to a website called WarmShowers.org that connects people riding around the world with people who think that sounds like an amazing adventure. The cyclists we met came from every point on the globe - Brazil, Sweden, Ireland, Australia, Canada - and most of them came to the United States to tour the country via the TransAmerica route, which meanders coast to coast from Oregon to Virginia. For many cyclists, Saratoga is the first night... Full story

  • Locals face personal, public tragedy in Casper

    Tom Dixon|Dec 5, 2012

At about 9 a.m. Friday morning, Saratoga graduate Shaylee Burgess walked out of her classroom in the Wold Physical Science Center at Casper College to meet up with her mother at the campus library. About 10 minutes later, police believe, Christopher Krumm, 25, of Vernon, Conn., allegedly walked into a nearby classroom, shot his father, James Krumm, 56, in the head and stabbed himself to death with a knife. “She was in class two doors down from where it happened, she had class from 8 to 9,” Tanya Stolns, Shaylee’s mother, said Monday. “We w...

  • Water call on tap for 2013

    Joe Elder|Dec 5, 2012

House District 47 Representative Jeb Steward is sounding a warning to water users in the Upper North Platte Valley to plan ahead for water use next spring and summer. Steward said all of the weather models and forecasts indicate a warmer, drier winter producing less than adequate flows into Pathfinder Reservoir, which could prompt a call for water from the Bureau of Reclamation (Bureau). To meet downstream demand, mostly from Nebraska, the Bureau maintains 1.1 million acre feet in Pathfinder...

  • Voices of the Valley reignites brand

    Joe Elder|Dec 5, 2012

Voices of the Valley (VoV) members, a citizen group formed in 2010 to facilitate community dialogue, met at Saratoga Town Hall Saturday to discuss the group’s past, present and future role in the Valley. Significant projects came out of the first couple of years of VoV’s existence, including the Saratoga Community Garden, the Platte Valley Habitat Partnership, and the North Platte River restoration project. In spite of those initiatives, VoV’s name is not behind its achievements. “VoV is not in...

  • Brush Creek-Hayden forest has new Ranger

    Joe Elder|Dec 5, 2012

Melanie Fullman, the new forest ranger for the Brush Creek-Hayden district, is ambivalent about the lack of snow in the mountains. If the dry conditions continue, they could add up to a rough fire season next year, continued forest health problems and tricky range management decisions. The late fall has also afforded Fullman, new on the job in late September, some time to get acquainted with the forest. “I have had an extended, late field season to get into areas of the mountains that you n...

  • Tigers start fresh, face trial by fire

    Tom Dixon|Dec 5, 2012

Encampment head coach Amy Clay lost last year’s entire starting lineup and then some, and a short bench means four freshman are going to get a trial by fire. “They’re going to get thrown into starting roles,” Clay said. “I think it’s going to be tough in the beginning, but in the years to come, they are going to benefit.” Junior Jennifer Morgan is the only Tiger who saw court time last year, so her leadership is going to be key for the young team. Showing Encampment School’s team spirit, se...

  • Lady Tigers drop three straight

    Liz Wood|Dec 5, 2012

The Encampment Lady Tigers came away empty handed from the Carbon County Classic Tournament, losing to Dubois, Wright and Saratoga. Friday night, the Lady Tigers opened against non-league Dubois (1-2 overall) with a tough 42-44 in overtime loss. “The girls were disappointed,” head coach Amy Clay said. “They know a lot of hard work is going to pay off.” Clay said if the girls had hit more of their free throws, they would have won. They only hit 6 of 20 free throws. Clay said she went over th...

  • Guard play key to Lady Panthers’ season

    Tom Dixon|Dec 5, 2012

With three of six seniors back on the Saratoga women’s basketball team for their final season, the Lady Panthers have the experience, chemistry and individual talent now for a deep run into the regional tournament - if they can put it all together. Saratoga’s offense will once again run through guards Taylor Smith, senior, and Justine Fourman, sophomore, this season. The two combined for 19.8 points per game last year, just under two-thirds of Saratoga’s points. “We’re definitely guard heavy, (j...

  • Defense, size key for Encampment hoopsters

    Tom Dixon|Dec 5, 2012

Top-ranked defense and three big men can once again put them in regionals and, hopefully, propel them past the likes of 1A Southwest conference foes Little Snake River and Cokeville. Last year, the Tigers started hot, winning seven of their first nine. Encampment’s only losing streak of the season came in the last three games against statebound Little Snake River, Ten Sleep and St. Stephens. Little Snake went on to win their second state title in a row. “Expectations are the highest they have be...

  • Saratoga transitions to small ball, coach calls for high-volume shooting

    Tom Dixon|Dec 5, 2012

Saratoga men’s basketball is trading in their set offense geared toward a short bench and big post players for a shiny, new game plan that relies on quickness and chemistry. “It’s not easy going from a set offense to a motion offense because there’s no set rules,” head coach Josh Sandlian said. “The kids are working hard to overcome that right now ... they’re getting pretty frustrated, but I think it’s going to be beneficial to them.” Big men Zach Miller and Thomas Koenig both graduated in the...

  • Two seniors lead raw wrestling squad into new season

    Tom Dixon|Dec 5, 2012

Lionzo Escobedo is one of just two seniors on Saratoga’s wrestling squad, and the only returning state placer, so head coach Jared Mason is going to lean heavily on him for leadership. “Lionzo steps in and fills that role as a natural leader, there isn’t a kid that works harder than him,” Mason said. “He’s willing to help show the younger kids ... he’s not just a senior saying I’m going to thump on you.” Escobedo and the Panthers will have their work cut out for them after losing standouts Corson Kerbs, Anthony Samson and Tom Stockwell to grad...

  • Freshmen lead the way

    Tom Dixon|Dec 5, 2012

Freshman Thatcher Spiering led Saratoga’s youngest wrestlers to some success at the Evanston Invitational over the weekend, earning an individual championship out of the gate and boosting the freshmen to a fifth place finish. “It was a good start, it may not look it for how many placed at varsity, but I thought we did some good things,” head coach Jared Mason said. “We weren’t at the caliber of those 4A schools we ran into.” Spiering pinned Oscar Marrufo, of Riverton, and Trenton Eldridge, of Cheyenne East, on the way to first place at 12...

  • Lady Panthers pick up two in county tourney

    Liz Wood|Dec 5, 2012

The Saratoga Lady Panthers got a beating from the Cokeville Panthers Friday night, but they rallied to notch two wins Saturday against Hanna-Elk Mountain-Medicine Bow (HEM) and Encampment. Senior Taylor Smith led the Panthers with 12 points, freshman Justine Fourman tallied 8 points and junior Shelby McGuire scored 7 points against Cokeville, but it wasn’t enough as the Panthers fell to Cokeville 39-67. “I was very happy scoring nearly 40 points against this veteran team of six seniors in our...

  • Togie buries Miners, scratched by cats

    Liz Wood|Dec 5, 2012

With a new offense in place, the Saratoga Panthers picked up one win during the Carbon County Classic Tournament this weekend. The Panthers lost to Cokeville 48-61. Saratoga held a one-point lead over Cokeville after the first quarter but Cokeville dominated the rest of the way after a second-quarter burst. Senior Ben Gates led the Panthers with 16 points and five defensive rebounds. “We have growing pains, but we got better, “ head coach Josh Sandlian said. The team is getting used to und...
