  • Hospital District Narrowly Misses the Vote

    D'Ron Campbell|Nov 27, 2024

On the ballot November 5, Memorial Hospital of Carbon County’s (MHCC) hospital district initiative barely failed to pass by 89 votes. Per a press release, this does not mean MHCC is closing its doors. The hospital does face financial challenges, but this was only one component of the overall financial picture. “I personally look at the campaign as a win. To take a grass roots approach to the campaign and to have accomplished what we did in just under 4 months is incredible. All techniques were used to market the district; digital mar...

  • Above Average Results

    Joshua Wood, Stevenson Newspapers|Nov 27, 2024

Across Carbon County School District No. 2 (CCSD2), administrative staff encourage the relationships between educators, students and parents to ensure academic success. The results of such a relationship are probably most evident at Encampment K-12 School, which is seeing success with both primary (elementary) and secondary (middle school and high school) students when looking at American College Test (ACT) and Wyoming Test of Proficiency and Progress (WYTOPP) scores. Taking Third In Wyoming,...

Two of the businesses, the Rustic Bar and Lazy River Cantina, have seen fights and unruly behavior at least twice a month. Liz Wood|Nov 27, 2024

Floaters and anglers are aware of the improvements made at Treasure Island, a popular public access on the North Platte River off Highway 230 between Riverside and Saratoga. But, if a person hasn’t been to Treasure Island in a few years, a lot of changes have taken place. The Wyoming Game and Fish Department (G&F) had their annual meeting in Saratoga two weeks ago, and one of the activities included was the improvements at the Treasure Island public access area. Steve Gale, the Wyoming Game & F...

  • Support Your Local Coffee Klatch

    Joshua Wood, Stevenson Newspapers|Nov 27, 2024

It seems that every small town and every community has a coffee klatch, a group of people—typically older—who gather at a chosen place to talk over their morning coffee. I’ve never had the time to sit in on one of those klatches, which seem to be overflowing with both coffee and wisdom. Yet, for some reason, I know where most of them are in Saratoga. To the best of my knowledge, our little town of less than 2,000 people has at least four coffee groups which meet at different locations and diffe...

  • We're losing trust, drifting from skepticism to cynicism

Tom Mullen, Green River Star owner Green River Star, Nov. 21|Nov 27, 2024

Tempers flared last week, as Democrats sought to cast blame for the Republican landslide - I was particularly galled when a friend laid the blame on, “newspapers who are too chicken to …” Hold it right there. Losing my cool was a regular occurrence 30 years ago but it takes a lot to get my Irish at age 64. Journalists, particularly the people in the newspaper business, are the most courageous people I know. Yes, soldiers and cops are brave but in my industry we don’t carry guns, at least not yet. When I started in this business, most of my coll...

  • Give Thanks, Shop Locally

    Nov 27, 2024

We at the Saratoga Sun have much for which we are thankful. For 137 years, the Saratoga Sun has had the honor and the privilege to serve the fine people of the Platte Valley. The weight of that responsibility is not lost on us, especially as we go through our archive when compiling ‘Reflections from Our Files’ each week. Even 100 years ago, there are names which are recognizable. It is humbling to see the articles on town council meetings, local events and high school sports over the past century and knowing that our own articles will be bou...

  • Give Thanks

    The Reverend Susan Dyer|Nov 27, 2024

It probably hasn’t escaped your attention: Halloween is not even over and yet Christmas decorations, Christmas catalogues, and Christmas songs are everywhere! The Thanksgiving turkey with all the trimmings seem to sandwich themselves in between the other celebrations barely noticed and yet – Picture this: family and friends gather on the fourth Thursday in November to remember the founding of our country, and ultimately to Give Thanks. Some gather around television sets to watch football, others push back from the table and rub their tum...

In her last election update as county clerk, Bartlett also voiced her opposition to hand-counting ballots, a process which was given a trial run in Campbell County. Wrong Ballots In Ca...

  • Education for students aged 0-99

    Liz Wood|Nov 27, 2024

People hear the word BOCES, but all they know is it has something to do with education. It is much more than that according to Stacey Erickson, the BOCES director. BOCES stands for Board of Cooperative Education Services and was formed in September, 2012 when the Western Wyoming Community College (WWCC) and the Carbon County School District No. 2 (CCSD2) Board of Trustees entered into a BOCES agreement. This allows the two entities to provide education services to children and adults including...

  • Ondrej the Tiger

    Joshua Wood, Stevenson Newspapers|Nov 27, 2024

During the Encampment Tigers’ six-man football season, there was one player who was head-and-shoulders above the rest. Literally. Seen during the defensive plays, No. 40 looked more like he belonged in a college or professional game than a high school game. Standing at over six feet in height, it was hard to miss him when he took to the field. “I’ve never played football [before], this was my first time. It was a great experience and I’m very grateful I could experience such a thing,” said Ondre...
