    Staff Report|Nov 4, 2020

Thanksgiving is quickly approaching and it would seem that there has never been more need in the 25 years of the Platte Valley Helping Hands’ Free Community Thanksgiving Day Dinner than 2020. Fortunately, the Platte Valley Helping Hands have every intention in following through with helping those in need this year. It will just look a little different. According to Marilyn Verplancke, no food or beverages will be served in St. Ann’s Parish Hall, which has historically hosted the annual dinner. Additionally, Platte Valley Helping Hands will not...

Carbon County School District No. 2 (CCSD2) added three more positive cases over the Halloween weekend according to an announcement from CCSD2 Superintendent Jim Copeland. As has been the case in recent weeks, this trend follows the trend of both the county and the state as Carbon County, as of Monday, had 64 active cases and Wyoming had 5,204. The announcement from Copeland, which can be found on the school district’s website, originally announced two cases on October 31 with one in Saratoga a...

  • Cuts possible for CCSD2

    Joshua Wood|Nov 4, 2020

As the Wyoming Legislature prepares to face down a substantial budget deficit and following significant departmental budget cuts from Governor Mark Gordon, school boards across the state are having to examine their own budgets. In the case of Carbon County School District No. 2 (CCSD2), a potential 16 percent cut in funding could come in the form of reduced personnel. During the October 19 meeting of the CCSD2 Board of Trustees, both the board and CCSD2 Superintendent Jim Copeland discussed a le...

  • Still funding the fight

    Joshua Wood|Nov 4, 2020

For the ninth year in a row, the Saratoga TechKids/SkillsUSA made a generous donation to the Corbett Medical Foundation. Traditionally, the school program hosts a golf tournament and a 5K run/walk event to raise funds. This year, however, the affects of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) forced the program to adjust. While the "Chip in for Cancer" golf tournament was able to take place as planned, the 5K run/walk had to go digital. Shirts, which were traditionally sold at the event, were sold at...

    Joshua Wood|Nov 4, 2020

As Carbon County School District No. 2 (CCSD2) continues to move forward into the school year with some students attending virtually instead of physically, the potential of teacher burnout has become a topic of discussion. During the October 19 meeting of the CCSD2 Board of Trustees, Director of Curriculum Noel Manning touched on the subject during his monthly curriculum update. According to Manning, the district was pushing the increased use of the Schoology program beyond just teachers who...

  • When are unofficial results official?

    Joshua Wood|Nov 4, 2020

Inserted in this week’s Saratoga Sun, and available on the Saratoga Sun website, are unofficial election results. This is a service that we have provided to our readers for, at least, the past three election cycles. This year, however, I want to stress the use of the word “unofficial.” Here in Carbon County, and in the state of Wyoming, we are rather lucky when it comes to our unofficial results on election night. With polls closing at 7 p.m., results are often available on the Secretary of St...

    Joshua Wood|Nov 4, 2020

The Carbon County School District No. 2 (CCSD2) Board of Trustees spent part of their October 19 meeting again discussing property in Medicine Bow that is leased to MedBow Lodging LLC. As the end of the calendar year approaches, so too does the end of the lease, which expires on December 31. Discussion of the lease and the property was placed on the agenda by CCSD2 Superintendent Jim Copeland. “This is just a reminder so it doesn’t sneak up right at the very end but their lease runs out Dec...

    Staff Report|Nov 4, 2020

With the alarming rise in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations around the state, Governor Mark Gordon and the Wyoming Department of Health (WDH) are stepping up their efforts to protect vulnerable populations, enhance contact tracing efforts and expand testing availability to all residents. Governor Gordon is also concerned that Wyoming’s economy will be affected by this rise in cases. While the state remains open, the impacts of the surge in cases affect all Wyomingites. Wyoming has averaged more than 200 new cases of COVID-19 per day over t...

    Mike Armstrong|Nov 4, 2020

Jackie Jones, head coach for the Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) Lady Miners told her team that they had to win their first game against the Lingle-Fort Laramie Lady Doggers or there would be no going to State. “We had to win that first game against Lingle,” Jones said. “If you lose the first game, you are done. So I told the girls we won the first game that really counted.” The Lady Doggers have met the Lady Miners twice this season and lost. This meeting had HEM come out on top, bu...

The Pronghorns kept the Miners scoreless and continued their march to the championship with a 0-70 win. Head Coach Zach Scott wasn't disappointed with his team. • Encampment end season with growth

    Joshua Wood|Nov 4, 2020

The Encampment Lady Tigers were dealt two losses as their regular season came to an end on October 23. While a loss to the Rock River Lady Longhorns on October 22 wasn’t a conference game, a loss to conference foes the Little Snake River Valley (LSRV) Lady Rattlers the next day kept them with only one conference win for the season. While last season the Lady Tigers had been able to secure a spot in the 1A West Regional Tournament, the effects of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) had a s...
