At a special meeting on Sept. 22 in Elk Mountain the JPB sought direction from SCWEMS JPB participating agencies (Carbon County, Saratoga, Encampment, Medicine Bow, Elk Mountain and Riverside) as to whether Hanna should become a member of the JPB. All SCWEMS entities, except for Saratoga, were represented by...

  • Hunting in town to be prohibited

    Madeline Weiss|Sep 30, 2015

The incident of shooting a deer with a projectile in town will be an isolated one, according to the planned actions of mayor Ed Glode. Saratoga Police Chief Tom Knickerbocker says there is no ordinance that says you cannot hunt in Saratoga. The code says that one may not discharge a firearm or firework, but Knickerbocker says that a BB gun, a pellet gun, a bow or a crossbow may be discharged within town limits providing the projectile does not leave the property. An incident of hunting in town...

  • Getting ready for kindergarten

    Madeline Weiss|Sep 30, 2015

Preschoolers will have the opportunity to attend kindergarten readiness workshops, which began on Sept. 28. These workshops allow Carbon County School District No. 2 (CCSD#2) to work with early childhood agencies so that preschoolers may be on track for kindergarten in three areas of learning: social and emotional, cognitive and physical. According to Melissa Donough, Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) coordinator, some of the kindergarteners were not doing as well as they might...

  • The best laid plans

    Erik Gantt|Sep 30, 2015

I intended to write this op/ed article on vacant land in town and what it costs to hold on to that land. My overly focused research goals (read: anal) did not allow me to finish that article in time for this week’s paper. In the meantime, I was inspired by the two longest police reports I have seen since I have been at the Sun. It seems our town’s finest (the Saratoga Police Department) are taking direction from the mayor and cracking down on traffic violations. I suggest that following Ord...

  • Sometimes it's just about showing up

    Sep 30, 2015

We were disappointed to see that the town of Saratoga, the largest municipal investor of the South Central Emergency Management Services (SCWEMS), failed to send a representative to an important special meeting last week. All of the other entities, except for Saratoga, were represented at the meeting. Since SCWEMS membership is based on population, Saratoga pays more into SCWEMS than any another invested community in the county. We approached Saratoga Mayor Ed Glode about Saratoga’s governing body’s lack of presence at the meeting. Glode sai...

  • X-Country surges at home

    Madeline Weiss|Sep 30, 2015

“You only get to shine in front of your home people once a year,” Saratoga Cross Country Head Coach Rex Hohnholt said. At the Saratoga Cross Country Invitational on Friday, the runners had some of their best times. Notably, Jeremy Detterer finished in second place on the course set up at the Saratoga Golf Course. He finished with a time of 18 minutes, 3 seconds with no one in sight behind him. According to Hohnholt, “Jeremy ran as good as race as he ever had.” The rest of the varsity boys ru...

  • Looking to the future

    Erik Gantt|Sep 30, 2015

It has been a tough three weeks for the Saratoga Panthers football team. Friday's game under the lights was no exception. The Shoshoni Wranglers handed Saratoga a 0-57 loss, but the Panthers showed some football acuity during the game. Even though the Panthers were losing, the Wranglers showed their frustration, earning several unsportsman-like penalties throughout the game. The Panthers had a hard time containing the Wranglers running game, but they kept the passing game in check. Panthers...

  • Erickson swings into sixth

    Liz Wood|Sep 30, 2015

Fast greens and a tough course in Wright kept the Saratoga Panthers from placing in the top three at state last weekend. Head coach Jared Mason is pretty happy with how the season went. The boys may have not won a trophy, but the coach heard plenty of compliments on how considerate and polite the Saratoga team was. “Coaches came up to me and said they enjoyed scoring the boys because they were so polite,” Mason said. Guy Erickson finished in a three-way tie for sixth place and qualified for all...

  • Lady Tigers overpower Lady Panthers

    Madeline Weiss|Sep 30, 2015

The Saratoga Lady Panthers (1-1, 7-6 overall) hosted the Encampment Lady Tigers (2-0, 11-1 overall) on Friday night, with the Tigers taking home the win (11-25, 12-25, 8-25). While both teams arrived energetic, the Lady Panthers lacked defense, according to Lady Panthers Head Coach Shayley Love. On the other hand, Lady Tigers Head Coach Robin O'Leary praised her team's offensive skills, saying they are on the right path for regional and state competitions upcoming. The rival teams have been...

  • Know the rules

    Erik Gantt|Sep 30, 2015

In a recent interview, Biff Burton, Wyoming Game and Fish Department (WGFD) Saratoga Game Warden, listed some common violations that hunters and fisherman commit. Trespassing on private lands, either intentionally or unintentionally, tops the list. “Part of planning the hunt is preparing where (the hunter) wants to go to hunt and preparing maps and GPS technology if they have it,” Burton said, adding, “A hunter needs to be literate in reading maps and if they are using technology like GPS they...

John Russo has been coming to Silver Spur Ranches for many years. He writes for a gun magazine, FMG Publications. Manufacturers have contracts with Silver Spur Ranches to test new rifles, and the writers come up to test and write about the new rifles. "That is how I got to know Dave (Sturm) and Silver Spur Ranches," Russo said. Russo is a firearms police trainer...

  • Rules for state trust land use

    Staff Report|Sep 30, 2015

With hunting seasons opening up across the state, hunters are asked to review the rules governing the use of State Trust Lands. The Wyoming Game and Fish Department does not manage State Trust Lands, but often receives questions from hunters and anglers on the rules and restrictions affecting usage of these lands. In general, hunters and anglers can use State Lands for hunting and fishing provided there is public access to these lands. This means the lands must be legally accessible via public road, right-of-way, easement, public waters, or...

Hunters who are in the age group where hunter education certification is required but have not yet completed a course may still be able to go hunting this year by participating in the Hunter Mentor Program. Since the program was implemented in 2008, thousands of prospective hunters of varying ages have been mentored through the program.
