  • Wind tax gets blown away

    FW Broschart|Sep 28, 2016

A tax on energy generated by wind that was proposed earlier in the year by the Wyoming Legislature’s Joint Revenue Committee (JRC) was nixed Thursday, removing uncertainty for the builder of the Chokecherry/Sierra Madre windfarm in Carbon County. When the tax was originally proposed by the JRC, Power Company of Wyoming (PCW), the builder of the windfarm, said such a tax would put the project in jeopardy. Kara Choquette, Communications Director for the company told Carbon County lawmakers in a May meeting that were the tax to be levied, the c...

  • Half a century on a wagon train

    Keith McLendon, Retro Blog|Sep 28, 2016

Fifty years ago a spacecraft was launched at the National Broadcasting Company. It was not a literal vessel but an idealized one sprung from the brain of a WWII pilot who, along with other distinctions, won the Distinguished Flying Cross. It was a craft that came to be backed and promoted by comic genius Lucille Ball and her Desilu Studios. The forward-looking Ms. Ball even managed to get the rerun rights to the show (along with “I Love Lucy”) from studio executives before the concept of reruns...

  • Lady Panthers split matches

    Max Miller|Sep 28, 2016

The Panthers volleyball team split the weekend's matches, but they didn't win the one they wanted to. A Saturday win over non-conference North Park in Walden, Colo. was overshadowed by a loss in four suffered the night before at home against conference competitor Farson/Eden. Despite strong showing in friendlies throughout the year, the Panthers have fallen 0 and 2 in the games that count, placing them towards the back of the pack in their 1A Southwest Conference. It was the Panthers' second...

Several hundred runners from around the region traveled to Saratoga to compete at the invitational. Despite the poor weather, teams still ran the course that had been mapped out across the resort's golf course, and Saratoga runners performed well at home. The varsity boy runners ran the 5K, and saw Reid Schroeder...

That elusive first W came in unexpectedly forceful fashion as the Cats, playing far from home, posted a 58-0 blowout victory over the Chiefs in their regional debut. • Bargains that give back

    Max Miller|Sep 28, 2016

Close to a dozen volunteers came to Bridge Street Bargains Sept. 22, to help with the thrift shop’s seasonal “flip” to winter clothes and accessories. A picnic table at Oddfellows Park painted with store funds recently went missing, but that hasn’t dampened the enthusiastic visions of store board members Julie Evans and Carol Beach. The pair see a big role in the Platte Valley community for the bargain outlet, and the store is already making contributions in several areas. According to Beach,...
