  • Fire update

    Max Miller|Sep 21, 2016

From all appearances, three wild fires burning near the state line are in terminal phase, and fire managers are shifting focus from suppression to rehabilitation. According to a Forest Service news release, management of the Beaver Creek, Broadway and Snake Fires are set to be downgraded from National Incident Management Organization (NIMO) to a Type III Incident Command Team Sept. 22. None of the fires have grown appreciably since heavy precipitation dampened fuels last week, and containment...

  • Behind the barbed wire

Dick Perue, Special to the Saratoga Sun|Sep 21, 2016

Manpower shortages during World War II led to establishment of a prisoner of war camp at Ryan Park, Wyo., in the Medicine Bow mountains of southern Wyoming, according to a 1943 article in the Saratoga Sun. While a camp, the facility housed Italian, German and Austrian prisoners, the article said. Much has been written about the Heart Mountain detention camp in northern Wyoming. • Planning commission draws the line

    Max Miller|Sep 21, 2016

"How do we divvy this up?" Saratoga Planning Commission member Will Faust asked at a Sept. 13 meeting of the group. Perhaps the quintessential question of planning, Faust was referring in this case to Saratoga's area of influence or town buffer zone, which must change to reflect new statutes from Cheyenne. The buffer zone, also called a realm of influence, is an area outside of but in close proximity to town limits. As enforced in the past, this zone extended one mile beyond town limits to form...

  • Lady Panthers bring "A" game

    Max Miller|Sep 21, 2016

After a momentary stumble against their first conference opponent Sept. 10, the Panthers volleyball team came roaring back to form last week. The girls took all three of their matches in commanding fashion, winning in the minimum three sets against Kaycee (Sept. 17) and North Park (Sept. 13), and taking what would have been a grudge match from the Laramie sophomore team in four sets Sept. 16. Laramie, whom the Panthers had already defeated earlier in the season, posed one of the biggest...
