Hanna Fire Department quickly came and, a little after noon, the fire was under control Hanna Marshal Jeff Neimark and Mayor Lois Buchanan were at the scene and were relieved the fire was not any danger to the town. • Can you hear me now?

    Joshua Wood|Sep 9, 2020

The process of expanding cell phone coverage in Carbon County began for Union Wireless on September 1 as four public hearings were held during a meeting of the Board of Carbon County Commissioners (BOCCC). All four conditional use permits, which are the first of many, were approved on a 3-2 vote. • New direction for historical building

    Joshua Wood|Sep 9, 2020

The historic Hugus-Ferguson Building will not be home to the Carbon County Museum anytime in the near future. Nearly seven years after the Board of Carbon County Commissioners (BOCCC) and the Carbon County Museum purchased the building, built in 1895, Museum Board President Ken Klouda informed the commissioners it wasn’t feasible to pursue the project. “You asked us for an update of where we are on the Ferguson Hugus (Hugus Ferguson) Building. I got on the museum board because I felt that, yes...

  • Hanna fire brings perspective

    Mike Armstrong|Sep 9, 2020

I thought it would be clever to write my thoughts on Saturday as I waited to see if I was going to have to be evacuated due to the 316 fire and the potential of losing pretty much everything I owned. I can’t tell you how interesting the story was because when the order came that the town was under a mandatory evacuation, I shutdown my computer without saving the document. When you are in a hurry, you do careless things. Ironically, I was at the first fire that started on the railroad tracks a... Full story

  • The danger of tribal politics

    Sep 9, 2020

Editor, An American historian once defined our national politics as the “systematic organization of hatreds.” Although this observation was made years ago, it is just as true today. In 2020, who you hate is who you are. Our parties today are largely driven by “tribal politics”, by what they are against, rather than what they are for. Political scientists call this phenomenon negative partisanship, and its dominance was on full display at both the Democratic and Republican conventions. The type of partisanship on display by both parties was fil...

  • The Old Fashioned

Mike Armstrong, Sponsored content by Valley Liquor|Sep 9, 2020

The Old Fashioned cocktail is a whiskey drink. It has a few variations and depending on how an imbiber wants to interpret history, the recipe for a proper Old Fashioned is disputed. How did this happen? The first drink close to the Old Fashioned, many whiskey drinkers consider the true recipe. It came from Jerry Thomas' Bartender's Guide published first in 1862. It was called the Whiskey Cocktail. The recipe was to take 3-4 dashes of gum (simple) syrup, 2 dashes of bitters, a small wine glass...

  • Saratoga tastes tough competition

    Joshua Wood|Sep 9, 2020

The Saratoga Lady Panthers faced some tough, upper conference competition early in their season as they traveled to Rock Springs on September 5. While the Lady Panthers went 0-2 against the Rawlins Lady Outlaws and the Natrona County Lady Mustangs, Head Coach Shayley Love was happy with the output of her netters. “I felt like the weekend went pretty well. We really thought we were playing a round robin and were going to have two more games but it ended up being two games total,” said Love. “Defi...

Encampment wasted no time in clawing into Midwest and, ultimately, won the game leading by nearly 60 points. "One of our goals this season is to set the tone of each game from the first snap," said Kegan Willford, head coach of the Encampment Tigers. "I feel like we did that for our first game. Getting ahead early in the game, like we did, also allowed everyone on the team to have a lo...

  • Mayor seat still vacant

    Joshua Wood|Sep 9, 2020

Two weeks after the resignation of Mayor John Zeiger, the Saratoga Town Council is no closer to filling the now vacant position. During the September 1 meeting of the governing body, Mayor Pro-Tem Bob Keel read a letter from legal counsel Tom Thompson regarding the vacant position. Discussion among the council appeared to show the town council agreeing to wait on filling the position until after the general election. In his letter to the council, Thompson wrote that he had reached out to the...

  • A little bit at a time

    Joshua Wood|Sep 9, 2020

At their September 1 meeting, the Saratoga Town Council began the process of moving excess revenues from Fiscal Year 2019/2020 into corresponding reserve funds. While the council appeared to agree that such an action needed to take place, the governing body disagreed on the how and the timeline. A four month period, proposed by Mayor Pro-Tem Keel at the guidance of third-party accountant James Childress, drew criticism from council members Jon Nelson and D’Ron Campbell. The enterprise funds a...

"Aunt Lily (Turner) passed away in December of 2014," Hanna resident Pam Paulson said. "She was a veteran and, at the time of her death, I ordered a veteran memorial headstone." Paulson said she was told to make the headstone she wanted, it could take a year. So as time went by, she didn't worry about the tombstone until about a year and half had passed. "Then I got curious to why it was taking so long, so I got in touch with mortuary," Paulson said. "The guy who I had put the order in with was...

  • Gathered up to the present

    Joshua Wood|Sep 9, 2020

It is, perhaps, an understatement to say that the Upper North Platte River Valley has a wealth of history. From copper mines to coal mines, from manifest destiny to the lumber industry, the Valley and the communities within its borders have a unique story. Fortunately, there are a handful of books-from Candy Moulton's "Grand Encampment" to Gay Day Alcorn's "Tough Country" to "Saratoga and Encampment Wyoming: An Album of Family Histories"-that can help guide even the most novice local historian....

  • Elva Evans is hooked on history

    Sep 9, 2020

by Dick Perue (Author's note: The following originally was written as an introduction for Elva's book, "Saratoga 150 Years" however, being extremely modest, she wouldn't include it in "Saratoga 150 Years". This is my personal account of Elva (Olson) Evans and her accomplishments over the past 80 years of our acquaintance and friendship. She has "kinda" agreed to me writing and publishing the following.-Dick Perue). Elva Evans' interest in history was sparked at her parents' ranch table where...
