  • Fire watch Wednesday

    Madeline Weiss|Sep 2, 2015

The National Weather Service (NWS) Cheyenne issued a Fire Weather Watch for Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. due to wind gusts of 30-35 miles per hour and dry conditions. According to an email from Gerry Claycomb at NWS Cheyenne, the conditions will continue late into the week “on a daily basis as the low pressure system that is causing the winds is slow to move through Montana.” This will “create favorable conditions for rapid fire growth if one were to start,” said Chris Hammer, meteoro...

  • CCSD#2 versus federal mandates

    Madeline Weiss|Sep 2, 2015

“I’m pretty sure we’re not going to make AYP (adequate yearly progress),” Carbon County School District No. 2 (CCSD#2) Jim Copeland said of the district’s general failure to make AYP. This is less of a problem with the actual schools, according to test scores that are mostly above the state averages, but rather with inconsistencies between the Wyoming Department of Education (WDE) and the U.S.Department of Education. Dicky Shanor, WDE Chief of Staff, explained that the waivers that free most...

  • To grow or not to grow ... that is the question

    Erik Gantt|Sep 2, 2015

I have been thinking a lot lately about services and businesses in the Town of Saratoga. I’ve also been talking to friends and co-workers about whether or not the town is growing or dying. My wife and I moved here a few years ago following her job and were very pleased with our good fortune. We bought a house and have since had a child. I won’t speak for my wife, but I would like to see our town grow and become more vibrant. It will give my little girl a better place to grow up and hop...

  • No benefits to marijuana

    Art Leys|Sep 2, 2015

Editor: In response to the Full page disertation on the “benefits” of marijuana, the only blowing smoke is you Keith. The obvious reason Pro medical bills are shot down is they open the door to general legalization of the drug. The same reason the NRA fights restrictions on anything that chips away at the 2nd amendment, however small. Ask any parent that watched their 10 yr old go down that slippery slope with pot, more serious drugs & crime. You can start with me. Ask any Law enforcement officer about the harmful effects of marijuana, bot...

  • Keeping it simple

    Erik Gantt|Sep 2, 2015

With six lettermen returning to the Saratoga High School football team, the skills positions will be filled with experienced players, but the team will be keeping it simple as the season starts according to Head Coach Scott Bokelman. "We're going to be inexperienced and kind of small," Bokelman said. This means fans can expect to see lots of dives, power plays, sweeps and quick pitches from the offense. Since the offensive line will be filled with relatively inexperienced players, Bokelman said...

While they lost to Little Snake River (whom they will not play again), the team performed well overall. "It was good to just see them get out and see them compete a little bit and kind of find out where everybody's at, what positions everybody's playing, if that's going to...

  • Lady Tigers aim for state championship

    Liz Wood|Sep 2, 2015

The Encampment Lady Tigers Head Coach Robin O'Leary has the recipe for a successful year – a talented starting team and an equally talented bench. Her goal for the season is to be No. 1 at state and the only thing that stands in their way is their attitude. "We are working on that this year," O'Leary said. Last season ended with the girls in fourth place at state-not where they wanted to be. An injury in the final game and an inexperienced bench hurt the team's chance for a repeat at third p...

    Madeline Weiss|Sep 2, 2015

The Saratoga Panthers cross-country team showed improvement from their times last year at their first meet, the Green River Invitational, on Friday. “Generally speaking, we ran a lot faster this year than we did at the same course last year,” Coach Rex Hohnholt said. “All of them … we’re talking a minute, minute-and-a-half faster.” Hohnholt explained that the conditions were not favorable—hot, with no breeze—so he was “pleasantly surprised.” According to Hohnholt, this is the first time that...

Participants in Chris Irwin's horsemanship clinic at the Blackhall Mountain Ranch got a lesson in how all aspects of the rider's body effect a horses actions. The three-day clinic brought in people from around the North Platte Valley and from as far away as Fort Collins, Colo. Many of the participants attended Irwin's clinic last year, and some were new to his teachings. Local ranchers Ron and Mayvon Platt and Alan Peryam said they learned a lot about the subtlety of body movement and the...
