Jack Berger prepares to rope the heel of a calf Saturday at the Carbon County Fair in Rawlins. Berger and his team participated in the Rancher’s Rodeo Saturday afternoon. His team won the event with a time of 2 minutes 4.7 seconds. The team, consisting of Kirby Berger, Ryker Hyche and Chuck Hyatt had to rope and brand a calf, gate a calf, tie down a calf and load a calf in less than five minutes.... Full story

Vernon “Bob” Jackson passed away on July 26, 2013, at the age of 71. Vernon was born Oct. 9, 1941 in Tampa, Fla., and was the son of Burrel and Jewell Jackson. He married Vicky L. Beckham on Nov. 10, 1979 in Cheyenne. Vernon served served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a Marine forever. He loved everything about the Marine Corps, and the military. In a heartfelt gathering at the Hotel Wolf last week, supporters involved with the recent 2013 Cancer Walk gave thanks for money raised and contributed toward a once-and-for-all cure for cancer. The Saratoga hot pool, one of the community’s greatest attractions, is a point of pride for all Saratoga residents and town officials. It’s a beautiful, relaxing, well-developed and neat place for all to visit and experience. It is at the very core of the “Saratoga experience” and we are all stakeholders in it. Editor: There is a fine line in an editorial that is written to be informative and fair to one that is written to keep the pot stirred. The Saratoga Hot Pool was vandalized three times in the past week, according to Mayor John Zeiger. “We usually don’t make a big deal about vandalism,” Zeiger said. But with three cases of vandalism in one week, Zeiger said it was time to act. The town of Saratoga is offering a $200 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the vandal. Saratoga resident Joe Elder is hosting the Platte Valley Trout Run, a 3.2 mile run in Saratoga, to honor Tyler Pickett, a war veteran who lost his life in combat June 8, 2008 in Iraq. A rough and rugged group of mountainfolk achieved first place at the Sierra Madre Mountain Man Rendezvous and Black Powder Shoot July 26-28. Brewer Steve Simpson is putting in extra hours at the Snowy Mountain Brewery in preparation for the 18th annual Steinley Cup Brewfest. Volunteer firefighters for the Saratoga Volunteer Fire Department opened up the station to the public in honor of 90 years of service. At Deseret Health and Rehab, residents enjoyed many activities throughout the week. The Activity Department offers a wide variety of activities each week to meet the residents’ interests, as well as the physical, mental and psychological well-being of each resident. The town of Saratoga is working with moving numbers as it starts off the fiscal year. The town of Saratoga released its FS 10 document, a document that displays budgetary items, revenue and expenditures reflective of the town’s general fund. According to the document, the town’s preliminary expenditures outweigh its potential revenue by more than $360,000. In Stableford, special points are given for birdies, pars, bogies and double bogies. One prize was given for first flight, as there were only two players.
