Candidates for District 47 Representative, District 11 Senator and Saratoga Town Council participated in the first of two candidate forums hosted by the Valley Service Organization (VSO) on July 23. Saratoga residents in attendance were scattered through the Great Hall of the Platte Valley Community Center. The event was live-streamed by Saratoga Sun via social media. VSO member Sue Jones, who moderated the first half of the forum, invited the state candidates up to the front of the room to...

The second of two primary election forums hosted by the Valley Service Organization (VSO) took place at 6 p.m. on July 25 at the Platte Valley Community Center. During this forum, candidates for all contested county seats were given the opportunity to address the audience. The second night saw noticeably more attendance than the event held on Monday night as both the Carbon County Attorney and Carbon County Sheriff races have been watched closely by county residents as evidenced by people...

  • Letter to the Editor

    Aug 1, 2018

Editor, Heads up Saratoga. Our landfill will not accept any plastic for recycling. Any plastic taken to the Saratoga Landfill along with any glass will be buried. Please don’t blame the landfill attendant, Steve. He is just doing what his boss, Ron Munson, told him to do. If you are a dedicated recycler like me, talk to Ron or any landfill board member or its chairman Randy Raymer to find out why no plastic is being recycled. I am taking my rejected plastic to Rawlins. Please consider taking your recycling to the Rawlins Recycling Center....

  • Keeping Carbon County quirky

    Keith McLendon|Aug 1, 2018

Fairly recently I have run some photos of the Carey sisters. These photos ran for two weeks in a row because they showed up for both the Independence Day celebrations Saratoga held and the centennial-and-a-quarter proceedings at the Hotel Wolf. You might wonder why I would give two out-of-towners the press. I have two reasons. First, they showed up in turn-of-the-century period costumes. Second, these ladies were a hoot. Everyone I talked to thought pretty much the same thing. The first time I...

  • Six man it is

    Joshua Wood|Aug 1, 2018

Rumors that had circulated throughout the summer that Saratoga Middle/High School (SM/HS) would not have an 11-man football team this year were confirmed on July 15 by SM/HS Activities Director Greg Bartlett through a press release posted on the Saratoga Middle/High School Facebook page. “This spring when we started looking into the upcoming 2018 HS football season,” wrote Bartlett, “we realized our participation numbers were going to be low. After both Saratoga and Encampment High...

  • Stars realign

    Joshua Wood|Aug 1, 2018

Wyatt Cox and Gage Bartlett have known each other since kindergarten, which is something that is not uncommon in an area like the Platte Valley. For the first two years of high school, both Cox and Bartlett played for the Encampment Tigers basketball team. When they entered their junior year, however, they went from teammates to competitors after Bartlett moved to Saratoga and began playing for the Saratoga Panthers. For Cox and Bartlett, their senior year was filled with memorable achievements....

He loved the place and was happy to return to play there on Friday. "Margaret (Weber) is a sweetheart," Helmer said. "She is so welcoming and it is like I am visiting an old friend." Helmer went further saying, "Bear Trap gets the funnest group." Besides playing at Bear Trap on Friday, Helmer was in Saratoga playing at Firewater Public...

The First United Methodist Church (FUMC) of Ft. Lupton had a mission team come to northern Carbon County to paint the parsonage at the Medicine Bow FUMC house from July 15-20. In addition to painting the parish house, the mission volunteered to help with the distribution of food from the Food Bank of the Rockies that comes to Medicine Bow once a month. The Ft. Saratoga Mayor Ed Glode began the discussion with a letter addressed to Kaiser from the Town of Saratoga. “The purpose of this letter,” Glode read, “is to inform you that the Town of Saratoga will not... Full story
