  • Neimark signs off

    Mike Armstrong|Jun 16, 2021

Hanna Marshal Jeff Neimark put in his last day in law enforcement on May 11. The town gave Neimark a small send off party to show their gratitude for his 13 years of service to the town. All told, Neimark has been working as an officer of the law for 32 years. Neimark started his career in Illinois where he had been raised. His father, Paul, was an author of 52 books, one of which was made into a TV movie called "She Lives". The writer raised the family in the Chicago metro area. "I grew up in H...

  • Deal or no deal

    Kaitlyn Campbell|Jun 16, 2021

It appears the recreational vehicle (RV) park saga might not be over yet. Over the past year, JaJaCa Properties owners James (Jimmy) Campbell and Jamie Campbell have attempted to construct a new RV park along Wyoming Highway 130. The project was brought to a halt in March, when the couple pulled their special use permit application (see "RV park hits the brakes" on page 1 of the March 17 Saratoga Sun). At the June 8 Saratoga Planning Commission meeting, a letter was received from the Campbells....

The headache of Senate File 60 and ad valorem taxes is continuing for county treasurers and will likely turn into one for county assessors as well. At the June 1 meeting of the Board of Carbon County Commissioners (BOCCC), Treasurer Patty Bentsen gave an update on the progress, or lack thereof, the Wyoming County Treasurers Association (WCTA) had made in speaking with the Wyoming Department of Revenue. According to Bentsen, the WCTA had met with both the Wyoming County Commissioners Association...

  • Hit the brakes or reduce speed?

    Joshua Wood|Jun 16, 2021

It is really quite interesting how one’s perspective affects their experiences. While I was not absent from the pages of the Saratoga Sun last week, I was absent from the office itself. I had finally scheduled some vacation time right before things typically get bustling here in the Platte Valley. Beginning with the Tale of Two Cities Golf Tournament this past weekend, it seems we are filled with events nearly every weekend until August. I was quite excited to take my vacation, too. I had p... Full story

  • Poverty of time describes these go-go and rush-rush times

    Bill Sniffin|Jun 16, 2021

“Time sure does change things,” said an airline passenger to his companion. “When I was a boy, I used to sit in a flat-bottomed boat on that lake down there below and fish. Every time a plane flew over I’d look up and wish I were in it. “Now I look down . . . and I wish I were fishing.” Time (or the lack of it) has always been a prime topic for people who work hard and miss out on all the fun activities that living in Wyoming can provide. This time stress is especially bad about this time of year. Spring and summer are times for fishing, go...

  • Preparing for a light show

    Joshua Wood|Jun 16, 2021

With Independence Day just around the corner, the desire to light off fireworks is likely increasing for individuals and commercial entities alike. Each year, businesses such as Brush Creek Ranch, Old Baldy Club and the Seminoe Boat Club put on shows for guests. Though fireworks are technically banned in Carbon County, a process is established in which residents can enjoy a light show by submitting an application to the county fire warden. While the application stipulates a $100 fee to go along...

Council members Jayson Nordquist and Sammy Sikes were absent. Once the agenda and minutes from May 11 meeting were approved, Buchanan told the audience that instead of board reports being gone over by their representatives, she would take any questions for each board as she read them off. Buchanan said High Country Joint...

This award, in the form of a $500 scholarship, is presented to a graduating senior within Carbon County School District No. 2. Each year, the VSO receives multiple applications from students in Saratoga, Encampment and Hanna. This year,...

  • Studying increase in wildfires

    Staff Report|Jun 16, 2021

Last fall, the Mullen fire west of Laramie raged for the better part of two months, burning more than 176,000 acres and 70 structures in Carbon and Albany counties, and in Jackson County, Colorado. Unfortunately, this scenario was typical during the intense 2020 fire season in the Rocky Mountain region, an area of Colorado and southern Wyoming where high-elevation forests are burning more than at any point in the past 2,000 years, according to a study in which a University of Wyoming faculty member was instrumental. “Global warming is c...

  • A model dedication

    Mike Armstrong|Jun 16, 2021

It is all too easy to become mesmerized by the various historical collections and exhibits at the Grand Encampment Museum in Encampment, Wyoming. On June 9, the museum added yet another one, which can be found in the Doc Culleton Building. A diorama of the aerial tramway, once the largest in the world, used to transport copper from Battle Mountain to Grand Encampment is off to the right when a visitor first comes into the building. At 16 feet long it is hard to miss. While, at one foot per...
