Mary Louise Vyvey passed away June 5, 2013 at Deseret Health Care in Saratoga at the age of 94. Mary was born Aug. 8, 1918 in Craig, Colo., the daughter of Leo and Eliza Hilewaert. She graduated from Mt. Gertrude’s Academy in May 1936. On May 10, 1938 she married John L. Vyvey and moved to the Platte Valley where they lived and worked on many ranches. They made Saratoga their permanent home in 1960. Mary was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church and past member of the Saratoga Homemakers Club. Mary enjoyed crocheting, knitting and also mad... Michelle attended the University of Wyoming and received a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing in 2010. The bride is currently a nurse in Crete, Neb. Friday, town of Saratoga employees were cleaning up Veterans Island. They closed the office and raked, cleaned, brought in wood chips for the playground and painted the barbecue hut. Mayor Pro Tem Judy Welton said she is very pleased with the first annual Beautify Saratoga at the Saratoga Town Council meeting June 4. Welton pointed out it was not just a group effort, but an individual effort, too. The Wyoming Search and Rescue Council recently approved $3,087.65 to be given to Carbon County for reimbursements of search and rescue costs. Applications for the National Resources Conservation Service’s (NRCS) Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP) are required to be turned in by June 14. The program will provide about $175 million in funding for up to 12.6 million additional acres enrollment this year. Gary and Mary Jacobsen are gearing up to serve as the 2013 Grand Marshals for the 53rd annual Woodchoppers Jamboree and Rodeo in Encampment this weekend. Mary said she and her husband will be in the parade waving and throwing candy to spectators. Ol’ Jim York Ol’ Jim was one of the original Lions Club members that helped to start the Woodchoppers Jamboree in 1960. He gave most of the credit for the original idea to Mike Hammer. Some of Jim’s stories were how hard Carl Vyvey could swing an axe, about how hard it was to get George Brugeman to bring his rodeo stock to Encampment for the first Jamboree Rodeo. If you come to the Woodchoppers Jamboree rodeo this weekend, you may encounter some residents rolling down a hill in a barrel in memory of a community member. The Judy Saulcy Memorial Barrel Racing will be a new open event at the rodeo this year, among nine other events attendees can enjoy. Nearly 100 golfers from all over Wyoming participated at the 18th annual Cow Pie Open Golf Classic tournament in Encampment June 1.
