By Wednesday, May 11, the first shift will have started at the long-dormant Saratoga sawmill, according to Gary Ervin. Ervin, the managing partner of Saratoga Forest Management (SFM), is a 50 percent owner of the firm, and manages many of the lumber plant’s day-to-day operations. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has issued final river flow estimates for the Upper North Platte River area of Carbon County, and the estimates place Saratoga at flood level, but not as severely as past flood years. The numbers, published by NOAA, estimate that the North Platte River at Saratoga will peak between 12,000 and 12,500 cubic feet per second (cfs). Wyoming native and Saratoga pioneer resident Ruth M. (Ward) Brock passed away April 24, 2016 in West Jordon, Utah at the age of 96. After more than 90 years in Saratoga, she moved to West Jordon five years ago to be near her daughter and son-in-law Nancy and A. J. Bartkoske. Betty Haines Love Johnson, 95, of Rawlins passed away May 3, 2016. She was born Dec. 19, 1920 in Rawlins to parents Katrina (Larsen) and Charley Haines. The family will hold services at a later date. Richard Dean Tyler passed away Tuesday, May 3rd 2016 in Spring Creek Nev. at the age of 84. He was born on May 18th 1931 in Bladen, Neb. to Benjamin and Lanzelle Tyler. On December 26, 1950 he married Ruth O. Angelos in Denver, Colo. Richard (Dick) Tyler was preceded in death by his parents Ben and Lanzelle Tyler, his brother Thomas Tyler and son Michael Joseph Tyler. At the last meeting of the Carbon County School District No. 2 (CCSD No. 2) on April 18 in Hanna, Superintendent Jim Copeland notified the board that a group of people in Saratoga has asked the school district to consider donating land near Saratoga Elementary School (SES) for an expansion of the ExCel preschool. Editor, Kudos to Mr. Winter and the town for handing what needed done to shore up the bridge prior to high water. Anyone who has looked at the North Platte River in the past month can see it has been carrying so much sediment that a few, or even a hundred, trips across it with equipment was not going to materially influence turbidly of the river to any significant degree. Thanks to funding from the Wyoming State Loans and Investment Board (SLIB), the Upper Platte River Solid Waste District (Landfill board) announced at its Wednesday meeting that it will now be able to build a new transfer station and close the existing landfill on schedule. The board also discussed a future rate increase, but did not vote on the raise. The Carbon County Office of Emergency Management will coordinate an exercise in Saratoga at 9 a.m., May 17 near Saratoga High School, according to Carbon County Emergency Manager John Zeiger. The exercise is intended to give first responders a realistic situation to manage, he said. Zeiger said the exercise will simulate a crash between a private vehicle and a school bus. Encampment High School’ (EHS) track team put in a strong showing at the Bobcat Invite in Thermopolis on Friday, with Encampment’s girls’ team leading the way with an overall sixth place finish out of 22 teams that competed.
