  • Recycled discussion

    Joshua Wood|May 8, 2019

Recycling was, again, the hot topic of discussion for the Upper Platte River Solid Water Disposal District (UPRSWDD) during their May 1 meeting held at the Encampment/Riverside Branch Library. With the price of baled old corrugated cardboard (OCC) showing no sign of moving up from $0 per ton, the Saratoga Transfer Station is finding itself holding onto the bales of cardboard. The UPRSWDD also set the dates and times for two education workshops in June and July, held the second reading of their...

  • On the plus side

    Joshua Wood|May 8, 2019

Following four lengthy budget workshops, the fifth workshop for the Town of Saratoga saw council members and department heads end up with a budget putting them $3,000 in the black. Despite being advertised for 6 p.m., the workshop on April 29 began at 5:30 p.m. and lasted for three hours. As has happened with previous budget workshops, Mayor John Zeiger quickly handed the workshop over to Councilmember Jon Nelson. Nelson informed those gathered of the work he had done since the April 15 workshop...

  • Back it up

    Keith McLendon|May 8, 2019

Apparently, if you write a column about how everyone should be nice to one another, you will be tested. I had a situation recently in which I either backed up my pretty talk or proved myself a hypocrite … I was headed to the hot pool late the other night for a soak and then a run to take my girlfriend (who works the night shift) a cup of coffee. When I got into the dressing room at the hot pool, I noticed two young men kind of hanging around. One was trying to charge his phone on an outlet near... Full story

  • Tourism a good return on investment

    May 8, 2019

Editor, As the second-largest industry in the state, it’s no surprise that tourism is big business in Wyoming. During 2018, Wyoming welcomed more than 8.9 million overnight visitors who spent more than $3.8 billion dollars in our state, while generating $196 million in local and state tax revenues. And while the tourism industry pumps substantial funds into the Wyoming economy, it also directly supports 32,290 full and part-time Wyoming jobs—which account for 8 percent of the state’s workforce. Here in The Upper North Platte Valley, our resid...

The Encampment Tigers improvised over the weekend as they dealt with the cancellation of the Shane Brock Invite in Lander, originally scheduled for May 4, and made the decision to go to the Wiseman Invite in Burns on May 3. "When we were notified that Thermopolis would not be having their throwing events due to the wet field, we made a last minute decision to attend the meet in Burns," said Kegan Willford, head coach of Encampment Track and Field. • Flower Pot successfully transplanted

    Joshua Wood|May 8, 2019

After nearly six months of feeling like petals in the wind, the Flower Pot has finally found a new place to set down roots. The purchase of the business from longtime owner Connie McGuire by Louis and Kinee Waits on Dec. 29 was just one factor that set in motion a months-long relocation of businesses. With Koyoty Sports in the former home of the Flower Pot and Strongtower Designs right next door, the only storefront in the Valley has planted itself right next to the Grumpy Italian. While the...

  • A Big Boy indeed

    Joshua Wood|May 8, 2019

I don't ever remember being specifically interested in trains growing up, though I have always found them intriguing. It was the Transcontinental Railroad that, for better or worse, established the American West as we have come to know it and has continued to be the life-blood for many communities. When I found out that Big Boy No. 4014 was making a trip from Cheyenne to Ogden, Utah. to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad, my interest was peaked....
