  • Governor Gordon eases restrictions on businesses

    Joshua Wood|May 6, 2020

The process of easing restrictions for closures due to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) began on May 1 as exceptions to two of Governor Mark Gordon's orders allowed for the reopening of businesses that have been impacted by those orders. All three orders have been extended until May 15. Under the first order, which was originally issued on March 20, gyms are allowed to open in a limited capacity. Additionally, restaurants may allow up to five customers at a time to enter to either pick up their...

  • Political office filings now open

    Joshua Wood|May 6, 2020

Though the 2020 Primary Election may seem to be farther away than it feels, the date of August 18 is rapidly approaching. In addition to this being a presidential election year, there are also a number of state, county and municipal offices that are up for grabs this year as well. May 14 marks the beginning date for those who may be looking to file as a candidate in the upcoming election. On the national level, the seat for United States Senator, a six year term, is up for grabs as Senator Mike...

  • Banking on local business

    Mike Armstrong|May 6, 2020

The Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), was the biggest component of small business relief included in the $2 trillion Coronavirus Aid Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act passed and signed into law on March 30. (See “Local banks invest in their communities” on page 5 of the April 15 Saratoga Sun.) “It is a great program,” Scott Thayer, RNB State Bank Rawlins Market President said. “It can help our small business customers and non-profits during this unprecedented period and it was extremely...

    Joshua Wood|May 6, 2020

Carbon County School District No. 2 (CCSD2) entered the fourth week of its Adapted Learning Plan as the CCSD2 Board of Trustees held a special meeting on May 4 to determine how the schools in the district would finish out the school year. As was previously reported (see “Putting a plan together” on page 3 of the April 1 Saratoga Sun), State Superintendent Jillian Balow had directed school districts throughout the state to submit their Adapted Learning Plan for approval to either complete par...

  • Hanna talks reopening

    Mike Armstrong|May 6, 2020

The Hanna Town Council met at 6 p.m. on Thursday at the Hanna Town Hall after delaying their regularly scheduled meeting on April 29. It was an abbreviated meeting since no board reports were presented. Mayor Lois Buchanan, Council members Bob Patton and Sam Sikes were present at the town hall and council member Linda Schisel was present by telephone. Council member Tracy Fowler was absent. There were no audience members. The agenda was quickly approved. The major topic of the council concerned...

  • So, what will you remember about the Pandemic of 2020?

    Bill Sniffin|May 6, 2020

As a journalist, covering the pandemic has been possibly the biggest story of my life. That is the main thing I will remember about this crazy period. I reached out to some other interesting folks and asked them what they will remember: World traveler and bestselling author Mark Jenkins of Laramie says: “The world is suffering horribly, so much so that I feel guilty living in Wyoming. Due to our wide-open spaces and small population, we can still get outside without seeing a soul. I have cross country skied or rock climbed or mountain biked o...

  • Plea to Governor Gordon

    May 6, 2020

Dear Governor Gordon, May I ask who cuts your hair? I assume someone in Cheyenne - or someplace close to there. When I see you on the TV your hair looks mighty good. If I just knew who dun’ that I think mine also could. Indeed, it is a long ol’ drive from Encampment all that way. But, with an early start I’d be back in just a day. As you know, shops here are closed and all over the State, I guess. If you do not let them open We’ll become a hairy mess. You see, I’ve always kept well trimmed since I was just a lad. Now after weeks without o...

  • Flabbergasted by funds

    May 6, 2020

Dear Editor, Well, here I go again, or should I say here we go again. I stood in front of the last administration in August 2017 and told the town council then they had a terrible track record of failed or incomplete projects at considerable financial loss to the Town of Saratoga. At that time, I read Suzie Cox’s internal memo (town being financially broke) for the record during the meeting. Now it’s 2020 and a new administration, except it’s really an older administration repurposed for a third term in office. Business as usual. And what this...

  • Giving back to those who give their all

    Joshua Wood|May 6, 2020

For Jezria "Jez" Collins, there is something special she feels about helping someone achieve home ownership. The real estate industry runs deep for Collins, who first obtained her broker's license at the age of 20 and whose mother, Andrea Shepherd, founded ERA Shepherd and Associates in 1997. In August 2018, Collins struck out on her own and put her years of experience to work as she founded Provident Realty. Now, nearly two years later, she is adding to her business as she has recently become...

  • Reeves signs with William Penn University

    Mike Armstrong|May 6, 2020

Brendon Reeves, a senior at Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) High School, signed a letter of intent in late April to attend William Penn University in Oskaloosa, Iowa. William Penn University is a private university. It was founded by members of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) in 1873 as Penn College. In 1933, the name was changed to William Penn College and, finally, to William Penn University in 2000. It has an enrollment of about 1,150 students and is a four year liberal art...

  • PVMA to hold National Day of Prayer at PVCC

    Joshua Wood|May 6, 2020

Much like everything and everyone else over the past two months, the Platte Valley Ministerial Association (PVMA) has had to rethink how to hold the National Day of Prayer. The observance of the National Day of Prayer has its roots in the founding of the United States and was formalized by President Harry S. Truman in 1952. Each year, the President of the United States signs a proclamation urging all Americans to pray on the first Thursday in May. In recent years, the PVMA has held their...

  • Food pantry still open to provide services

    Joshua Wood|May 6, 2020

Over the past several weeks, the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has impacted many facets of Americans' way of life. The price of gas has plummeted, unemployment has soared to numbers not seen since the 1930s and the use of food banks in the United States have significantly increased. In Wyoming, the Wyoming Hunger Initiviate, spearheaded by First Lady Jennie Gordon, committed $40,000 to food banks or mobile food pantries in all 23 counties of the state. Here in Saratoga, the Saratoga Food Pantry w...

  • From parents to teachers

    Mike Armstrong|May 6, 2020

It is no secret that the closure of Wyoming schools, has tested both students and parents. Now the 2020 school year will be completed at home. Some parents think this a good idea. “I believe finishing the school year at home is smart. I know doing online school at home is difficult for many families but for us, it has meant extra time with our children,” Hanna resident and Hanna Basin Museum Director Sunshine Solaas said. She has six children, most in the Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM)...
